You buy a jacket, a TV or a blender, and a week later it’s cheaper. Some stores will quietly refund the difference if you ask in time; others won’t, and one store’s “price match” rule is not the same as another store’s “price adjustment.” This guide compares eight of the stores people search for most, using each store’s own policy page wherever we could read it.
Sources: policy pages from Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Best Buy, Uniqlo USA and Gap Inc. (Old Navy’s sister brands), all read on October 3, 2026. Costco’s and Amazon’s help pages block automated readers, so for those two we cite press and label it as such. Old Navy’s own page lists “Price adjustments” as a topic but its details didn’t load for us. Policies change; confirm with the store before relying on a deadline.
What is a price adjustment policy?
A price adjustment (sometimes called a price guarantee or price drop protection) is a store’s promise to refund the difference if its own price falls shortly after you bought. It’s different from price matching, where the store lowers its price to meet a competitor’s price, usually at the register. The two often sit on the same page, which causes confusion.
Target’s page, for example, is titled “Price Match Guarantee” but also covers a lower Target price found after you buy. Nordstrom’s covers both its own markdowns and those of a short list of named competitors. Best Buy’s page says it will match its own lower price “during the return and exchange period.” Read the exact wording before you assume a store will chase a competitor’s sale.
Price adjustment policy comparison by store
This table sums up what each store says. Details follow in the sections below.
| Store | Window | Key conditions | How to request | Main exclusions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Target | At purchase or within 14 days after | Identical item; lower price on Target.com, in stores or via a Target Circle deal | Chat, call 1-800-591-3869, or Guest Services in store | Clearance, closeout, open-package and refurbished items; no stacking with coupons or Circle Bonuses |
| Macy’s | 10 days from order date | Lower price must be an advertised Macy’s price; items sold and shipped by Macy’s | Chat or 1-800-289-6229; in store with receipt | Direct from Vendor items; promos can’t be combined; no third-party or app requests |
| Nordstrom | 10 days from shipment date | Same color and size, in stock; one adjustment per item | Online request through order lookup; in store with an ad or link | Anniversary Sale and other events, outlet and flash-sale prices, designer items bought on sale |
| Best Buy | During the return and exchange period | Best Buy lowers its own price; match is upon request | Chat, 1-888-BEST BUY, or any store | Marketplace, clearance, refurbished; special sales and Thanksgiving week for price matching |
| Uniqlo | 14 days from purchase (in store) | One-time; receipt required | In store only | Pre-advertised promotions; no online-order adjustments |
| Costco | 30 days, according to press | Official page not readable | Online form or warehouse counter, per press | Gold bullion, per press |
| Old Navy | Not confirmed | Page lists a “Price adjustments” topic | Contact Old Navy customer service | Not confirmed |
| Amazon | None, per Amazon statement to press (Dec 2025) | Official help page not readable; pre-orders reportedly covered by a separate guarantee | Ask customer service; outcome not guaranteed | Not applicable |

Price adjustment policy at Target
Target says price matches “may be requested at time of purchase or within 14 days after purchase.” The promise: if you buy a qualifying item at Target and then find the identical item for less at Target.com, in a Target store or with a Target Circle deal, Target will match it. It matches Target.com prices on in-store purchases, and in-store prices for Target.com purchases. Prices at other Target stores are excluded.
- Same item: identical brand, size, weight, color, quantity and model number, and the lower price must be listed and valid at the time of the match.
- In store: ask at checkout or at Guest Services with proof of the current lower price. Target says digital proof must be on a mobile device; screenshots or pictures aren’t accepted.
- Online: use Target’s chat, or call Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869 with your order number and item details.
- Not covered: clearance, closeout, liquidation, damaged, used, open-package, refurbished and pre-owned items; typographical errors; contract phones; online pricing in Alaska and Hawaii; and items from Target Plus partner sellers. Target coupons, Target Circle Bonuses and gift card offers can’t be combined with a match.
Our read: Target’s page frames this as a “price match” rather than a “price adjustment,” but it does cover Target’s own lower price after you buy, which is what most people mean. For a return instead, see the Target return policy guide.
Price adjustment policy at Macy’s
Macy’s says: “If the price of your item drops within 10 days of your order date, you can request a price adjustment.” The lower price must be an advertised Macy’s price, and the refund goes to your original form of payment.
- Online orders: chat with Macy’s or call 1-800-289-6229 (TTY 711), 8 AM to 10 PM ET, with your order number and item details.
- In-store purchases: visit your local Macy’s and bring your receipt.
- Furniture and mattresses: call 1-888-822-6229 with your salescheck number. The 10 days start at the delivery date for White Glove or in-home delivery, or at the ship date for warehouse and vendor shipments.
- Eligible: items sold and shipped by Macy’s and eligible digital third-party seller items.
- Not eligible: Direct from Vendor items; some third-party items excluded from promotions or sitewide sales. Promotional discounts can’t be combined with a price adjustment.

Price adjustment policy at Old Navy
Old Navy’s customer-service page “Tracking or Changing Orders” lists “Price adjustments” in its description, so the topic exists. But the page content we could load didn’t include the days, request steps or exclusions, and Old Navy’s returns page and shipping page didn’t mention price adjustments at all.
Gap’s own page, “Getting a Price Adjustment,” says: 14 days from the order date; the item must have dropped in price after you bought; it’s a one-time adjustment per eligible item; final-sale items and items bought with promotion codes or discounts (other than free-shipping-only offers) are excluded; and online purchases can’t be adjusted in a store. Athleta’s page says the same 14-day rule. That is Gap and Athleta, not Old Navy, and we can’t tell you Old Navy matches it.
Price adjustment policy at Nordstrom
Nordstrom’s pricing policy: “If we—or one of the select competitors listed below—mark down the price of an item you’ve already purchased, we’re happy to adjust the price at your request.” The request must come within 10 days of your shipment date.
- Conditions: the item must be identical in color and size, and in stock at both Nordstrom and the competitor. Only one price adjustment per item.
- Named competitors include: Amazon (sold and shipped by Amazon), Bloomingdale’s, Finish Line, Foot Locker, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sephora, Shopbop, Ulta Beauty, Zappos and certain vendor websites. The page lists more than we show here.
- How to ask: submit a request online through order lookup. In store, you need a current ad or a working link to the competitor’s page.
- Excluded: order-level discounts, gift card promotions and shipping offers; outlet stores, flash sales, auctions, clubs, regional and non-U.S. retailers; items in Savings Events, Limited-Time Sales, Extra Savings, the Anniversary Sale and Daily Deals; and designer items bought on sale.
- Approved adjustments go back to your original form of payment. Nordstrom doesn’t accept automated requests from third-party services.

Price adjustment policy at Best Buy
Best Buy’s Price Match Guarantee page says: “If we lower our in-store, online or app price during the return and exchange period, we will match our lower price, upon request.” The page shows an effective date of September 2, 2026. So your window is whatever your return period is, and that depends on the product and your membership.
| Customer | Return and exchange period |
|---|---|
| Standard, most products | 15 days |
| My Best Buy Plus or Total, most products | 60 days |
| Activatable devices | 14 days (30 days for Verizon devices) |
| Holiday decorations | 15 days for everyone |
Those periods come from Best Buy’s Return & Exchange Policy (effective February 23, 2026). The period starts the day you receive the product. To ask, use Best Buy Chat, call 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289), or visit any store.
Separately, Best Buy’s price match of competitors is at the time of purchase, covers new, immediately available products and excludes Marketplace items, clearance, refurbished and open-box items, Black Friday pricing, special daily or hourly sales, and the period from the Thursday before Thanksgiving through the following Monday. We could not confirm from the page whether those exclusions also apply to Best Buy’s own price drops, so ask. For returns, see the Best Buy return policy guide.
Price adjustment policy at Uniqlo
Uniqlo USA’s FAQ is clear: “You may request a one-time price adjustment in-store” within 14 days of the original purchase date. A receipt is required, though the item doesn’t have to be with you. Items bought during pre-advertised promotions are excluded. The page adds that the Ala Moana store can’t honor online prices and that in-store pricing may differ by location.
Online is different. Uniqlo says: “Online orders are not eligible for price adjustments due to system limitations.” The alternative is to return the item for a refund of the cost at the time of purchase, and return shipping fees apply. So if you’re shopping Uniqlo online and a sale starts the next day, the price-adjustment route is closed; the return route costs shipping.
Price adjustment policy at Costco
This one comes with a caveat. Costco’s help center has pages titled “Price Adjustment - Costco.com Orders” and “Price Match - Costco.com Orders,” but Costco’s site blocks automated readers, so we could not read them. We’re relying on two press and consumer-deal sources, which are not official:
- A Groupon blog guide says you have “exactly 30 days” from purchase to request an adjustment, via an online form for Costco.com orders or at the warehouse’s returns or Member Services counter, and that gold bullion is excluded.
- Slickdeals’ editorial site (February 2026) also reports 30 days, with in-store and online requests, and says you can’t get an online adjustment for a lower in-store price, or the reverse.
Two more press and deal-site guides agree on 30 days and on keeping the channels separate: Dealnews (updated July 29, 2026) and The Krazy Coupon Lady (updated December 30, 2025). Both say a receipt isn’t required in the warehouse because the counter can look up the purchase by membership, while the earlier sources disagree on the receipt, so bring your membership card and the receipt anyway. They also differ on exclusions: Dealnews lists gold bullion plus Black Friday and “Holiday Savings” event prices, while the Krazy Coupon Lady says only gold bars, gold bullion and silver coins are never adjusted. Check Costco’s page yourself for the current rule. For returns, see the Costco return policy guide.
Price adjustment policy at Amazon
Amazon’s help pages also block automated readers, so we can’t quote Amazon directly. What we found:
- Amazon’s help center has a page titled “About the Pre-Order Price Guarantee.” We saw the title in search results but couldn’t open the page.
- Retail Dive reported in May 2016 that Amazon stopped refunding price drops on all products except televisions, and had previously done so within seven days of purchase.
- TechRadar (December 1, 2025) reports that Amazon confirmed it “doesn’t offer any post-order price adjustments,” with the same policy in the US and UK. It adds that Amazon used to refund further drops on Black Friday deal products automatically, but that process is no longer in effect. This is press quoting Amazon, not Amazon’s own page.
- Dealnews (updated July 27, 2026) says the same, and lists a few narrow exceptions such as pre-orders. It also claims TVs sold and shipped by Amazon can get an adjustment within 7 days of delivery; we couldn’t confirm that against Amazon, and it sits badly with the TechRadar statement, so don’t count on it. That is a deal site’s summary, not Amazon’s wording.
Bottom line: expect no price adjustment on regular items; the exception we saw reported is eligible pre-orders. Don’t count on one otherwise. If the price drops and you’re still inside the return window, returning and rebuying is the common workaround, but check the item’s return terms and any fees first: Amazon return policy guide.
How to request a price adjustment, step by step

- Check the clock. Count from the date the store uses: purchase date (Target, Uniqlo), order date (Macy’s), shipment date (Nordstrom) or the return period (Best Buy).
- Confirm it’s the same item and a real store price. Same size, color and model. Macy’s needs an advertised Macy’s price; Nordstrom needs an ad or a working link for a competitor’s price.
- Have your proof ready. Order number for online purchases, receipt for stores (Macy’s, Uniqlo). At Target, show the lower price on a phone, not a screenshot.
- Contact the store. Chat or phone for online orders; the service counter for store purchases. Gap’s page says price adjustments for online purchases can’t be made in a store, and Uniqlo doesn’t adjust online orders at all.
- Keep a record. Write down the date, the agent’s name and any reference number until the refund appears. Timing for the refund to reach you is covered in how long a refund takes.
When a price adjustment won’t work
- You used a coupon, promo code or promotion. Macy’s says promotional discounts can’t be combined; Gap’s page excludes items bought with promotion codes; Target excludes coupons and Circle Bonuses.
- The item is clearance, closeout, final sale or open-box. Target, Best Buy and Gap all exclude versions of this.
- The price is from a special event. Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale, Best Buy’s Black Friday pricing and Uniqlo’s pre-advertised promotions are all carved out.
- A third party sold it. Macy’s Direct from Vendor items, Best Buy Marketplace items and Target Plus partner items are out.
- You asked through an app. Macy’s and Nordstrom both say they don’t accept third-party or automated requests.
If the store says no
Ask politely for the policy in writing and the reason for the refusal, especially at stores that put the days on their page. A return plus repurchase is the practical fallback while you’re still inside the return window, but check for restocking or return-shipping fees first (Uniqlo, for one, says return shipping fees apply to online returns).
FAQ
How many days do I have for a price adjustment?
It depends on the store: Target 14 days after purchase, Macy’s 10 days from the order date, Nordstrom 10 days from the shipment date, Uniqlo 14 days in store, and Best Buy within its return period (15 days for most products).
Does Costco do price adjustments?
Press reports say yes, within 30 days. Costco’s own help pages were not readable for us, so check Costco’s “Price Adjustment” page or ask a warehouse Member Services counter.
Does Amazon do price adjustments?
Generally no. Amazon’s own help pages were not readable for us, but TechRadar (December 2025) quotes Amazon as saying it “doesn’t offer any post-order price adjustments.” Eligible pre-orders are reportedly covered by a separate price guarantee. Otherwise, check your return window.
Does Uniqlo adjust prices on online orders?
No. Uniqlo USA says online orders aren’t eligible “due to system limitations.” In-store purchases can get a one-time adjustment within 14 days with a receipt.
What is the difference between price matching and price adjustment?
A price adjustment refunds you when the same store lowers its own price after you buy. Price matching lowers the price to meet a competitor’s, and usually applies at the time of purchase. Some stores, like Target and Nordstrom, cover both on one page.
Can I get a price adjustment if I used a coupon?
Usually not. Macy’s says promotional discounts can’t be combined, Gap’s page excludes promo-code purchases, and Target excludes coupons and Target Circle Bonuses.
Does Nordstrom adjust prices when a competitor drops the price?
Yes, for a list of named competitors, within 10 days of your shipment date, if the item is identical in color and size and in stock at both stores.
Does Old Navy have a price adjustment policy?
Old Navy’s customer service page lists “Price adjustments” as a topic, but we couldn’t read the details. Gap’s page says 14 days from the order date; contact Old Navy to confirm its own terms.
