Discount Calculator: Sale Price, Percent Off, Stacked Discounts and Tax
Three calculators in one: the sale price after one or two discounts (with optional sales tax), the real percent off a deal, and how much you save.

How to calculate a discount
Sale price = price × (1 − discount). A $80 item at 25% off costs $80 × 0.75 = $60; you save $20.
Stacked discounts don’t add up
“30% off plus an extra 20% off” is not 50% off. The second discount applies to the already reduced price: $100 × 0.70 × 0.80 = $56, a real discount of 44%. The calculator shows the effective percent.
What percent off is this deal?
Percent off = (original price − sale price) ÷ original price. If something dropped from $129.99 to $89.99: $40 ÷ $129.99 = 30.8%.
Adding sales tax
Enter your sales tax rate to see the total at the register. Tax is generally charged on the discounted price, but how manufacturer coupons are taxed varies by state.
FAQ
How do I calculate 20% off?
Multiply the price by 0.80. That’s the sale price; the difference is your savings.
Is 30% off plus 20% off the same as 50% off?
No. Discounts stack by multiplying: 0.70 × 0.80 = 0.56, so you pay 56% of the price — a 44% discount.
How do I find the original price from the sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). $60 after 25% off means the original was $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
Is tax calculated before or after the discount?
Usually after a store discount, on the price you pay. Manufacturer coupon rules vary by state.
