Lost the receipt, got a gift, or never printed it? You can usually still return the item, as long as you know what each store lets you do. The rules differ more than most people expect: some stores find your purchase with a card, some give only credit, and some tie everything to an account. This guide compares seven stores side by side, explains why they ask for ID, and shows how to request your own return history if you are ever refused.
Based on store help pages read on Oct 3, 2026: Walmart’s refund help page, Target’s returns page, Marshalls’ return policy page, Zara’s US Help Center, Amazon’s newsroom, and The Retail Equation’s own pages. Walmart’s lookup details (card, phone, email) come from the Aug 17, 2026 policy cited in our Walmart guide. Home Depot’s and Costco’s full return-policy pages could not be read, so their rows rely on press reports and are marked. Policies change, so check the store’s page for your purchase.
Can you return something without a receipt?
At the stores covered here, yes in most cases, with limits. What you give up when the receipt is missing is usually not the return but the form of the refund. A receipt gets the money back on the card or cash you used. No proof of purchase tends to get a gift card, merchandise credit or exchange, and a photo ID at the counter.
The reason is simple: with a receipt, the store knows what you paid and when. Without one, the store has to settle on a price on its own. Home Depot, for one, is reported to refund at the lowest advertised price, and most of these stores keep the credit inside their own shops.

Return without receipt: store-by-store comparison
| Store | What you get with no proof | Photo ID? | How it finds your purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walmart | Exchange, Walmart gift card, or repair through the manufacturer if available | Yes, government-issued, must match Walmart’s secured database | Debit/credit card, or phone or email for online orders (per Walmart’s Aug 2026 policy) |
| Target | Merchandise return card, redeemable in Target stores only; not cash, not on Target.com | Yes, required to issue the card | Target Circle Card and third-party Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover credit cards |
| Home Depot | Often store credit at the lowest advertised price (as reported) | Yes (as reported) | Credit card, debit card or check payments (as reported) |
| Costco | Refund to original payment; a Costco Shop Card if the original card is unavailable (dealnews) | Not stated on pages we could read | Membership card or Costco app at the returns desk (dealnews) |
| Marshalls | Non-transferable merchandise credit; not usable on marshalls.com | Yes, plus name, address and signature | Not described in the policy |
| Amazon | No paper receipt involved; return from your order. Gift recipients get an Amazon gift card | Not part of the process | Your account order, or a 17-digit order number for gifts |
| Zara | In-store returns need a receipt or Zara QR; gift receipts get a Zara gift card | Not mentioned | Zara QR linked to your account, or a scanned paper receipt |

How to return without a receipt at Walmart
Walmart’s refund help page says: “If you don’t have your receipt, show us your valid government-issued photo identification.” You can then exchange the item, take a Walmart gift card, or send it to the manufacturer for repair where that is available. Walmart says the ID information must match its secured database.
Before it gets to that, Walmart’s policy says the store can look up purchases made with the debit or credit card you used, and online orders by phone number or email. Walmart limits how often you can do no-receipt returns but does not publish the number in the help text we read. Some third-party sites quote exact limits; we found none on Walmart’s own pages, so ignore them. More on windows and exceptions in our Walmart return policy guide.
How to return without a receipt at Target
Target can try to look up a receipt for purchases made with a Target Circle Card (debit, credit or Mastercard) or a third-party Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover credit card. Debit cards from other banks are not on that list, which is why a Target app barcode or order email beats any card.
If there is no proof of purchase, Target hands you a merchandise return card. Its terms are specific:
- A government-issued ID is required for issuance.
- It can be spent on merchandise or services at Target stores, but not on gift cards or prepaid cards.
- It cannot be used on Target.com, and it cannot be redeemed for cash or credit except where required by law.
- Only one card can be redeemed per transaction, and funds don’t expire.
Gifts are different. With a gift receipt you get a Target GiftCard, and the return cannot be processed on the same day the gift was bought. Full rules in our Target return policy guide.
How to return without a receipt at Home Depot
Home Depot’s own return-policy page did not load its text for us, so this row rests on press reports (dealnews, Store Policies, Return Policies Info, Simply Wise). They agree on the basics: Home Depot can often find card and check purchases, a driver’s license or other government photo ID is required for an unreceipted return, and a return it cannot match may be refunded as store credit at the lowest advertised price. The lookup period varies between sources, from 90 days to 24 months, so ask. Details, exceptions and refund timing are in our Home Depot return policy guide.
How to return without a receipt at Costco
This is where Costco differs. Costco’s pages we could read describe a 100% satisfaction guarantee on products and membership but not the receipt process. dealnews (updated June 18, 2026) says to “present your membership card or the Costco app at the returns desk,” that refunds typically go to the original payment form, and that a Costco Shop Card may be issued if you no longer have the original card. For a gift you did not buy, the buyer’s membership number can locate the transaction.
Costco’s 90-day rule for TVs, computers, major appliances and similar electronics applies with or without a receipt. See the Costco return policy guide.
How to return without a receipt at Marshalls
Marshalls states it plainly: for a return with no receipt, “a valid government-issued photo ID, name, address, and signature will be required for the merchandise credit to issue.” The name on the ID must match the name on the credit when you spend it. The credit is non-transferable, and credit issued for a no-receipt return cannot be used on marshalls.com. If you have a receipt but missed the 30-day store window (40 days online), you may get a merchandise credit usable online or in store at any TJX store instead. Details in our Marshalls return policy guide.
Returning to Amazon without a receipt
Amazon has no paper receipt to lose. Your order lives in your account, and the return starts there: you pick a drop-off location, receive a QR code and bring the item unpackaged to a location where it is scanned, with no box or label required, according to About Amazon. Amazon says there are more than 10,000 such drop-off locations in the US.
The gift case is the one that matters here. A recipient can use the Returns Center with a 17-digit order number from the packing slip or digital gift receipt, if the item was marked as a gift. The refund then comes as an Amazon.com gift card issued to the account making the return. Without the number, you would need the digital gift receipt from the sender or customer service. Refund times and fees are in our Amazon return policy guide and the QR code guide.
Returning to Zara without a receipt
In a Zara store you must show the paper receipt or your Zara QR. Zara’s help pages do not describe an in-store return with neither. Returns by mail through a drop-off point do not need to include the receipt, but the return costs $4.95 deducted from your refund.
- Show your Zara QR when you pay and the receipt links to your account under In-store Purchases.
- A paper receipt can be scanned and saved with Add Receipt in the app.
- With a gift receipt, Zara refunds to a gift card that does not expire. Getting the money back on the original payment method needs the original receipt.
Our Zara return policy guide covers windows and exchanges.
Why do stores ask for ID on returns?
A photo ID ties the return to a person, not just an item. Stores say the goal is to catch return fraud and policy abuse. Some stores do that in house, and some use a third-party return-authorization service. The best-known is The Retail Equation (TRE), which describes itself as a company that “helps retail companies detect and prevent potentially fraudulent transactions and reduce policy abuse.”
TRE says it links transactions to an ID number, such as a form of payment or government-issued ID (“Linked History”), and that its FAQ explains that retailers contract it for “an automated recommendation to the cashier on whether you should be denied or warned.” It also says it does not co-mingle data across retailers, and that retailers may accept, warn or deny a transaction based on their own policies. Not every store uses TRE, and stores rarely say which vendor they use. The stores in this guide did not name a vendor on the pages we read, so we cannot say which of them use it.
How to request your return activity report
If a store has refused a return and says it came from the system, you can ask for the data. TRE’s site offers three routes:
- Online: request your Retail Activity Report (RAR) at rar.theretailequation.com, up to 60 days after the transaction, by entering the Transaction ID printed on your receipt. It is a string of numbers and letters that always ends in 3 letters.
- By phone: call the number on your receipt and be ready with your transaction ID, ID number, full name, address and phone number.
- By email: write to consumerinquiry@theretailequation.com. TRE’s FAQ also names ReturnActivityReport@TheRetailEquation.com for report requests, so use whichever the current site lists.
TRE’s FAQ says the report “shows all your return data that was considered in making the denial or warning decision.” The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse (2019) describes it as listing store names, return dates and times, receipt status and dollar amounts. If it has errors, you can file an inquiry.
Gift returns, online orders and mail returns
| Situation | Expect |
|---|---|
| Gift with a gift receipt (Target) | Target GiftCard, not on the day of purchase |
| Gift with a gift receipt (Zara) | Zara gift card that does not expire |
| Gift with a packing slip (Amazon) | Amazon gift card to the account making the return |
| Gift, no receipt (Marshalls) | The policy does not mention gift receipts, so expect the no-receipt rules: ID, name, address, signature, credit |
| Online order, receipt lost (Walmart, Home Depot) | Order number or confirmation email, the card and ID at the store (Home Depot as reported) |
If your refund is slow after a lookup return, our refund timing guide lists typical card and gift card delays.
Tips to make the next return easier
- Use one card for store purchases. A lookup works best when the store can search a single card.
- Sign in or scan the app code when you pay: Target’s barcode, Walmart’s account and Zara’s QR all put the receipt online.
- Photograph the receipt before you leave the parking lot.
- Track the deadline. Use the return deadline calculator, since no store extends the window because the receipt is missing.
- Return gifts promptly and carry ID. If you are told no, ask politely for a manager and for the reason.
