“How long will my Amazon refund take?” has two answers: how long Amazon takes to approve it, and how long your bank or card issuer takes to show it. This guide separates the two, so you can tell whether the delay is on Amazon’s side or yours.
Based on Amazon’s official newsroom (About Amazon: holiday return policy 2025 and returns at Whole Foods), the CFPB and Regulation Z, checked on Oct 3, 2026. Amazon’s own “Refund Timelines” help page blocks automated reading, so we couldn’t re-open it today. The gift card, credit card and debit card figures below come from Amazon’s newsroom; for other payment methods we point you to the help page instead of quoting numbers we couldn’t check.
How long does an Amazon refund take?
Amazon says that once it receives your return, refunds are typically processed within days, and the time it takes to see the money depends on how you paid. These are the three timelines Amazon published in its 2025 holiday returns announcement:
| You paid with | Refund goes to | How long after processing |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon gift card balance | Gift card balance | 2–3 hours |
| Credit card | Same card | 3–5 business days |
| Debit card | Same card | Up to 10 business days |

Other ways to pay, such as Shop with Points, prepaid cards or bank accounts, have their own timelines on Amazon’s Refund Timelines help page. Our Amazon return policy guide summarizes them; because we couldn’t re-check that page today, confirm the exact figure there before you rely on it.

When does Amazon actually issue the refund?
This is where most “my refund is late” confusion starts. There are really three clocks:
- Getting the item to Amazon. At a no-box drop-off point, an employee scans your QR code and prepares the item for shipping. Then it travels to an Amazon facility, which can take several days. That time isn’t part of the refund timelines above.
- Amazon processing the return. Amazon says that once it receives your return, refunds are typically processed within days. At Whole Foods, Amazon says that once the return has been processed it issues the refund in the payment form you requested, typically within several hours.
- Your bank posting it. This is the 3–5 business days (credit) or up to 10 business days (debit) in the table.
Amazon’s help page is also cited as describing an “advance refund” for some returns, issued when the carrier first scans the package instead of waiting for the warehouse. We couldn’t read that page directly, so we can’t tell you which items or accounts qualify. Your return status in your account shows when the refund has been issued.
How long does an Amazon refund take to a credit card?
Amazon quotes 3–5 business days after the return is processed. “Business days” excludes weekends and holidays, so a refund issued on a Friday can take until the following week to show.
Your card issuer controls the last step. Under the federal Truth in Lending rules (Regulation Z, §1026.12(e)), a card issuer has to credit your account with the amount of a refund within 3 business days of receiving a credit statement from the merchant. That’s the issuer’s deadline once the merchant’s credit reaches it, and it doesn’t replace Amazon’s own processing time.
How long does an Amazon refund take to a debit card?
Amazon says up to 10 business days. Your bank has the last word on when the money shows in your checking account. If you paid with a debit card and the 10 business days have passed, call your bank before opening another ticket with Amazon, but only once your Amazon account shows the refund as issued.
How fast is a refund to an Amazon gift card balance?
This is the fastest route: Amazon lists 2–3 hours after the return is processed. If you paid with a gift card balance and the refund hasn’t shown up in your balance by the next day, check your Amazon account’s return status, because processing, not posting, is probably the delay.
Refund after a return at Whole Foods, Kohl’s or The UPS Store
The drop-off location doesn’t change how fast Amazon refunds you; it only affects how fast the return reaches Amazon. Amazon’s Whole Foods page says that once the return has been processed, the refund is issued typically within several hours, in the payment form you requested. For step-by-step drop-off instructions, see our guide on getting an Amazon return QR code and where to use it, or the Kohl’s Amazon returns guide.
A realistic timeline, start to finish
Amazon only publishes the last leg, so here is how the legs add up. The drop-off-to-warehouse leg isn’t published by Amazon and varies by carrier and distance, so the example leaves it open rather than guessing a number.
| Leg | Who controls it | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| You start the return and drop the item off | You | Same day if you go right away |
| Item travels to an Amazon facility | Carrier | Not published; watch the status in your account |
| Amazon receives and processes the return | Amazon | “Within days” of receiving it, per Amazon |
| Refund posts to your payment method | Amazon, then your bank | 2–3 hours (gift card), 3–5 business days (credit), up to 10 business days (debit) |
The practical takeaway: a “fast” refund to a credit card is not one that arrives the day after you drop the package off. It’s one where each leg stays inside its range.
Business days vs. calendar days
Amazon quotes its credit and debit card timelines in business days. Weekends and bank holidays don’t count. A refund issued on the Thursday before a long weekend and quoted at 3–5 business days can therefore show up more than a week later on the calendar. Gift card balance refunds are quoted in hours, so those aren’t affected by weekends in the same way.
Holiday returns and refund timing
Amazon extends its return window for holiday purchases (for 2025, items bought between Nov 1 and Dec 31 could be returned until Jan 31, 2026, with Apple products until Jan 15, 2026). The refund timelines in this guide are the same ones Amazon cited in that announcement, so an extended window gives you more time to send the item back but doesn’t change the posting time once it’s processed. Our Amazon return policy guide covers the window and fees; we haven’t seen the 2026 dates published yet.
Why your refund may be smaller than you expected
If the amount is lower than the price you paid, the cause is usually a deduction, not a timing problem. Amazon’s policy can reduce a refund for late returns, for items returned used or damaged, and for certain return fees. The details and percentages are in the return policy guide. Check the refund line on your return status before assuming money is missing.
Is your Amazon refund late? What to do
- Open your return status. In your Amazon account, go to Your Orders and open the return for the item. It should show whether the return was received and whether a refund was issued. Keep the drop-off receipt or QR confirmation until the refund arrives.
- Compare against the timelines. If the refund shows as issued, count business days from that date using the table above before contacting anyone.
- Contact Amazon customer service if your return was received but no refund shows as issued, or if the status hasn’t changed for much longer than the item’s shipping time. Have your order number and drop-off receipt ready.
- Contact your bank or card issuer if Amazon says the refund was issued and the timeline for your card has passed. Ask whether a credit is pending.
- Dispute the charge as a last resort. The CFPB says to start by contacting the seller, and that you can ask your card company to dispute a charge. For billing errors, send notice within 60 days of the charge appearing on your statement.
Refunds on items sold by third-party sellers
If a third-party seller ships its own inventory, the return goes to that seller, not to Amazon. The refund timing then depends on when the seller receives and processes the return, and Amazon’s refund timelines apply to the payment step. Our return policy guide explains the seller return rules and the A-to-z Guarantee. If the seller isn’t responding, the A-to-z claim is the formal route.
Refund time vs. return deadline
A refund can’t start until a return is accepted, and a late return can be refused or charged a fee. Refund times at other stores are in our refund time by store guide. Check the “Return by” date on your order with our return deadline calculator, then start the return early enough to leave room for the drop-off and processing time.
What we couldn’t verify
- Amazon’s Refund Timelines help page: it blocks automated reading, so we relied on Amazon’s newsroom for the three timelines above.
- Refund times for Shop with Points, prepaid cards, bank accounts and buy-now-pay-later plans such as Affirm: confirm them on the Refund Timelines page or with the provider.
- Exactly which returns get an advance refund at the first carrier scan.
