Costco’s return policy is famous for being generous, but most of what gets repeated online comes from blogs, not from Costco. This guide separates what Costco itself states from what others report, so you know what to confirm before you head to the returns counter.

Based on costco.com membership and product pages, Costco’s Executive Rewards terms and its annual report (Form 10-K for fiscal 2025), checked Sep 29, 2026. Costco’s full return-policy article on its customer service site could not be accessed for this guide, so details that appear only there are marked as reported by other sources.

How long do you have to return something to Costco?

For most products, Costco doesn’t publish a general deadline on the pages we could read. Instead it offers a risk-free 100% satisfaction guarantee on both your membership and merchandise, with “limited exceptions.” On merchandise, Costco says: “We guarantee your satisfaction on the products we sell with a full refund.”

Costco’s own annual report puts it the same way: “To promote member satisfaction, we generally accept returns of merchandise.” That word “generally” matters. The guarantee is a promise, not an unlimited right, and product pages add that “certain items are not available for return or refund or may have limitations on their eligibility for return or refund.”

Check the product page first. On costco.com, the “Shipping & Returns” section of each product tells you if that item has a special window or can’t be refunded. It’s the most specific official source you can check yourself.

Which items have a 90-day return window?

Costco’s 10-K says: “On certain electronic items, we have a 90-day return policy.” Costco.com product pages for a TV and a refrigerator both state: “Costco will accept returns within 90 days (from the date the member receives the merchandise) for this product.” So the clock starts at delivery or pickup, not at the order date.

Costco’s full list of 90-day categories is in its customer service policy, which we couldn’t access. The deals site dealnews (updated June 18, 2026) reports these categories:

GroupItems reported under the 90-day rule
Home electronicsTelevisions, projectors, home theater systems
ComputingLaptops, tablets, desktop computers
Personal techSmartwatches, cell phones, MP3 players
PhotographyCameras, camcorders, drones
Major appliancesRefrigerators, freezers, ranges, dishwashers, washers and dryers

Treat this table as a guide, not as Costco’s wording. If you’re near day 90 on a gadget, check the item page or call Costco (1-800-774-2678) before you assume it’s covered.

The trade-off for the shorter window: on certain electronics, Costco says it provides free technical support and an extended warranty. Its membership page lists an extended 2-year warranty on major appliances, televisions and computers through Costco Technical & Warranty Services.

What can’t you return to Costco?

We couldn’t access Costco’s complete list of exceptions. What we confirmed on costco.com:

  • Gold bars: the product page says “Item is non-refundable” and that it isn’t eligible for price adjustments.
  • Any item marked with limits: product pages warn that some items can’t be returned or have limited eligibility.

Other sources report more exceptions. dealnews lists Costco Shop Cards, gold and silver bullion, event tickets and airline vouchers as non-refundable, and says cigarette and alcohol returns “are prohibited in many states due to local laws.” It also reports that diamonds of 1.00 carat or more need all the original paperwork and a 48-hour gemologist inspection before a refund. Confirm any of these with your warehouse.

Can you return to Costco without a receipt?

Costco’s official pages that we could access don’t describe the no-receipt process. dealnews reports that Costco can look up your purchase if you “present your membership card or the Costco app at the returns desk.” We couldn’t confirm this on an official Costco page. Bring your membership card, the item with all its parts and, if you still have it, the receipt.

How to return a Costco.com order

Costco’s product pages say that “Costco.com products can be returned to any of our more than 800 Costco warehouses worldwide.” That’s the simplest route for most online orders:

  1. Check the window on the product page, especially for electronics and appliances (90 days from delivery).
  2. Take the item to any Costco warehouse with your membership card, including the accessories, manuals and packaging if you have them.
  3. Ask at the returns or membership counter about the refund method and when it will reach your card.

For items too big to carry, costco.com has an “Orders & Returns” section in your account. dealnews reports that you can start most online returns there with a prepaid shipping label, that Costco can often arrange a pickup for bulky items like mattresses or furniture, and that mailed returns may take 5–7 business days to process once received. Costco doesn’t confirm those details on the pages we could access.

Can you cancel your Costco membership and get a refund?

Yes. Costco states: “We will cancel and refund your membership fee at any time if you are dissatisfied.” This is the membership half of the satisfaction guarantee.

Executive members: to get back the Executive upgrade fee, you must cancel or downgrade to Gold Star or Business, and “any 2% Reward issued or accrued will be subtracted from the refund.” The Executive-only perks end at the same time. Details in our Costco membership guide.

Do returns affect the Executive 2% Reward?

Yes. Costco’s terms say the Reward is about 2% of “pre-tax purchases (less refunds).” A $1,000 TV you return removes that $1,000 from the total your Reward is based on. It also means buying and returning items doesn’t increase your Reward.

Is Costco tightening its return policy?

In February 2026, Newsweek reported claims that Costco was tracking how often members return items, requiring manager approval on flagged accounts and asking for stricter proof of purchase on electronics. The same article notes that “Costco itself has not publicly announced any official policy changes.” We found no official change either. Costco’s member terms do say it can “refuse, decline, or cancel a membership at any time,” and it doesn’t say how it treats members who return items often.

Tips for a smooth Costco return

  • Note the delivery date of any TV, computer, phone or appliance. The 90 days run from when you receive it.
  • Keep all parts and paperwork, especially for jewelry, electronics and anything with a certificate.
  • Wipe devices and sign out of accounts before returning phones, tablets or laptops.
  • Compare with other stores if you’re deciding where to buy electronics: see the Best Buy, Walmart and Target return policies.
