You don’t need a printer, a shipping box or packing tape to send most Amazon returns back. You need a QR code on your phone and a nearby drop-off partner. Here’s how to get the code, where to use it and what to do when the option doesn’t show up.
Based on Amazon’s newsroom (free returns with no box, tape or label; returns at Whole Foods; updated Mar 25, 2026), Kohl’s Amazon returns page and a 2023 Retail Dive report on Staples, checked Oct 3, 2026. Amazon’s own returns help pages block automated reading, so details that only appear there (item eligibility lists, label-method packaging rules) are marked as “check Amazon” instead of stated as fact.
How to get an Amazon return QR code
- Sign in and open your orders. On Amazon.com or in the Amazon app, go to Your Orders and select the item you want to send back, then choose the return or replace option.
- Pick the reason and the refund type. Follow the prompts Amazon shows for that item.
- Choose a drop-off location. Amazon lists the nearby no-box locations that accept that item. Choose one: The UPS Store, Whole Foods Market, Kohl’s, Staples, FedEx Office and others, depending on your area.
- Get the QR code. Amazon shows the code in your account once you confirm. Kohl’s says it’s also sent to you by email. Take a screenshot so you can open it fast, even with a weak signal at the counter.
- Take the item to the location. Show the code, hand over the item and keep the receipt or confirmation until the refund posts.

How do you package an Amazon return?
At a no-box location, you don’t. Amazon describes the process like this: you “bring your unpackaged item and QR code to the selected location, where the item is scanned and prepared for shipping,” with no shipping box or label required. Kohl’s says its associates “pack, label and ship your return for free.” Staples, according to Retail Dive’s 2023 report, takes unpackaged, unlabeled items at its full-service shipping area.
A few things still matter:
- Bring everything that came with the item: accessories, cables, manuals and free gifts, so the return isn’t flagged as incomplete.
- Keep the item in the condition Amazon requires. Used or damaged returns can lose part of the refund; see our Amazon return policy guide for the deductions.
- If Amazon gives you a prepaid label instead of a QR code, the item is going by a carrier and needs to be packed for shipping. Follow the packaging instructions on that return’s confirmation page; we couldn’t read Amazon’s own packaging guidance, so check it there.
Where can you drop off an Amazon return with a QR code?
Amazon says its free return network has more than 10,000 locations in the US and that four out of five US customers have at least one within five miles. Locations named in Amazon’s March 2026 update:
| Drop-off partner | What Amazon or the partner says |
|---|---|
| The UPS Store | Free, unless there’s another free option closer to your delivery address; in a small number of cases a $1 fee may show. |
| Whole Foods Market | Pickup & Return desk, typically near the entrance. Hand the item to an employee who scans the code, or use a self-service kiosk. Amazon says some kiosks let you finish in 60 seconds or less. |
| Kohl’s | “The Return Drop @KOHL’S.” Kohl’s packs, labels and ships for free. Accepted at all Kohl’s stores except Anchorage, Alaska. See our Kohl’s Amazon returns guide. |
| Staples | Named by Amazon as a partner. A 2023 Retail Dive report said all Staples stores took Amazon returns from July 31, 2023. |
| FedEx Office | More than 1,500 locations nationwide, per Amazon’s March 2026 update. |
| Rent-A-Center | More than 1,700 locations, for label-free, box-free returns and counter pickups. |
| Regional partners | Select Save Mart stores (California and Nevada), select Winn-Dixie stores (Florida) and Goodwill (greater Seattle area only). |
Amazon’s update does not list Amazon Fresh stores, and the page doesn’t mention Amazon Lockers for returns, so don’t assume either will take your return. If Amazon Fresh or a locker shows up as an option when you start your return, that’s your confirmation; if it doesn’t, pick a partner from the list Amazon shows.
Step by step at Whole Foods
Whole Foods is the one partner where Amazon documents the in-store routine in detail. After you select Whole Foods as your drop-off location and get the QR code:
- Go to the store’s Pickup & Return desk, typically near the entrance.
- Either hand the item to an employee who scans your QR code, or use the self-service kiosk: scan the code, answer the questions on screen and put the item in the designated bin.
- Walk away with the item left behind. No shipping box, tape or label is needed.
Amazon’s page says nothing about fees at Whole Foods, and presents the return as free.
Before you leave home: a one-minute checklist
- The QR code is open in your Amazon app or saved as a screenshot.
- The item and everything that came with it are in one bag or in your hands.
- You’ve confirmed the “Return by” date hasn’t passed.
- The location you picked is open for the next hour.
- Your phone is charged. The code is useless on a dead phone, and the associate needs to scan it.
Printing isn’t part of this flow at all: Amazon says no label is required at QR-code drop-off locations, and Kohl’s says its associates pack and label the item for you, so you don’t need a printer at home.
Is an Amazon QR code return free?
Amazon describes the program as generally free. The one fee it spells out is at The UPS Store: the option is free unless there is another free option closer to your delivery address, and in a small number of cases customers may see a $1 fee. Choose the closest free location offered when you start the return. Separate charges can still apply under Amazon’s policy, such as late-return fees or deductions for used or damaged items, regardless of the drop-off partner. Those percentages are in our Amazon return policy guide.
Staples also handed out a coupon with Amazon returns when the program launched, according to Retail Dive in 2023. We couldn’t confirm that it’s still running, so treat any coupon as a bonus rather than a reason to choose a store. Kohl’s own Amazon returns page doesn’t mention a coupon.
What if there’s no QR code option for your item?
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| No drop-off location appears | The item or your address isn’t eligible for QR drop-off. Pick another return method Amazon lists. |
| Amazon offers a label instead of a QR code | Pack the item for shipping and follow the instructions on the return confirmation. |
| Third-party seller item | Use the seller’s return method (label, address or refund without return). |
| QR code won’t scan | Turn up the screen brightness and reopen the return in the app. If it still fails, ask the associate and contact Amazon. |
| Wrong location chosen | Open the return in your account to see what Amazon allows, or ask Amazon customer service. |
For heavy or oversized items, check the options and any fees Amazon shows before you carry the item anywhere; our return policy guide covers the fee rules.
After you drop it off: refund timing
The refund is issued by Amazon, not by the store. Amazon’s newsroom lists these times after the return is processed:

At Whole Foods, Amazon says refunds are typically issued within several hours once the return has been processed. The item still has to reach an Amazon facility first. For payment-method details and what to do if it’s late, read our Amazon refund time guide.
Tips for a smooth drop-off
- Don’t arrive at closing time. A person has to scan and prepare each item.
- Check store hours. Partners use their regular store hours; Kohl’s, for example, doesn’t publish separate hours for Amazon returns.
- Mind the “Return by” date. Starting the return isn’t enough: dropping off late can trigger late fees under Amazon’s policy. Use our return deadline calculator.
- Return several items? Neither Amazon nor Kohl’s publishes a per-visit limit on the pages we checked, so confirm with the store if you have many.
What we couldn’t verify
- Amazon’s own help pages on return methods and packaging (they block automated reading).
- Whether Amazon Fresh stores or Amazon Lockers accept returns.
- Whether the Staples coupon reported in 2023 is still offered.
- Size, weight and per-visit limits at each partner.
FAQ
How do I get a QR code for an Amazon return?
Start the return in Your Orders, choose a drop-off location and Amazon shows the QR code in your account. Kohl’s says the code is also emailed to you.
Do I need a box or label to return to Amazon?
Not at a no-box drop-off location: Amazon says you bring the unpackaged item and the QR code, and the item is scanned and prepared for shipping there. Eligibility depends on the item.
Where can I drop off an Amazon return?
Amazon names The UPS Store, Whole Foods Market, Kohl’s, Staples, FedEx Office, Rent-A-Center and select Save Mart, Winn-Dixie and Goodwill locations, among more than 10,000 US drop-off points.
Is it free to return Amazon items with a QR code?
Generally yes. At The UPS Store the option is free unless another free option is closer to your delivery address, and a $1 fee may show in a small number of cases.
What if I don’t see a QR code option?
Then that item isn’t eligible for QR code drop-off in your area. Choose another return method Amazon shows, such as a label.
Can I return to Amazon without a printer?
Yes, when a QR code drop-off is offered for your item: the code stays on your phone and the location handles the shipping label.
Does Amazon Fresh accept Amazon returns?
Amazon’s March 2026 list of drop-off partners doesn’t name Amazon Fresh. If it appears as a location when you start your return, you can use it; otherwise choose a listed partner.
How long until I get my refund after dropping off a return?
Once Amazon processes it: 2–3 hours to a gift card balance, 3–5 business days to a credit card and up to 10 business days to a debit card. The trip back to Amazon adds time first.
