Macy’s Return Policy: 30 Days, the $9.99 Mail Fee, Star Rewards and No-Receipt Returns

Macy’s return rules are simple for most items: 30 days, tags on, any Macy’s store. The exceptions are where the money is lost: a mail fee that depends on Star Rewards, jewelry that is inspected before you’re refunded, designer brands with their own windows, and furniture, which has a separate policy with its own fees.

We could not open Macy’s free shipping page or its Star Rewards terms, so we do not state how Star Rewards tiers relate to free return shipping beyond what the return policy says.

What is Macy’s return policy?

Macy’s says that if you’re not completely satisfied, most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery or purchase. Items must be:

• Unworn and unaltered
• In original condition, with original tags attached
• In original packaging, when applicable

Mismatched garment sets aren’t accepted. Macy’s adds that cosmetics and fragrances may be returned if they don’t meet your needs. Refunds are issued to your original form of payment.

Macy’s return policy: how many days by category?

Furniture and mattresses

Macy’s has a separate Furniture & Mattress Return Policy, and the clock is much shorter for some furniture:

• Furniture on scheduled delivery: contact Macy’s within 3 days of delivery; a 15% restocking fee applies.
• Furniture shipped by UPS or direct from the vendor: returns accepted within 30 days of delivery, in original condition and packaging; a 15% return fee applies and it can’t be returned to stores.
• Mattresses: a one-time reselection or return within 120 days of delivery, if undamaged, unstained and in good condition. A $99 pickup fee applies, and a 15% preference fee may apply depending on the brand.
• Delivery fees are nonrefundable, and shipping fees and surcharges are too.

What can’t be returned at all

These are final sale and can’t be returned, exchanged or price adjusted: Last Act merchandise, food, beverages and live plants, gourmet gifts, Macy’s gift cards and altered or personalized merchandise.

Macy’s return policy without a receipt

Macy’s doesn’t say “no receipt, no return.” Its return instructions say that if you don’t have a receipt it may be able to look up your purchase using:

• The credit card used
• Your order number or email confirmation
• A packing slip or shipping label
• A gift registry number

If there’s no way to find the sale, the return policy page says, in its gifts and registry section: “Without proof of purchase, store credit may be issued for the lowest selling price in the last 180 days.” For Macy’s Backstage the page says the same with a 90-day look-back, and that a name and address may be required. With a gift receipt or registry number you receive store credit.

Macy’s online returns: free or $9.99?

Items bought in a store must be returned to a Macy’s store, and in-store returns are always free. Items bought online can be returned in store or by mail. Mail is where the fee comes in.

Free return shipping does not apply to lamps, wall art and mirrors, furniture and furniture accessories, beds, and area rugs.

How to return by mail

1. Start the return online at macys.com/returns.
2. Print your label. You can access, print or reprint it any time in My Account > Purchase History after you submit the request.
3. Pack it. Use one label per box and put your return slip inside the package.
4. Send it back and keep your tracking and drop-off receipt.
5. Watch for the refund to your original form of payment.

Macy’s Star Rewards and returns

Star Rewards matters for two reasons.

• Mail returns are free for members, while non-members pay $9.99 plus tax.
• Points are removed on returns. Macy’s says points earned from returned merchandise are removed from your balance, and if you don’t have enough points to cover the return, available Star Money may be reduced accordingly.

Macy’s says you can join for free as a Bronze member. The program has four levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum), with the higher tiers tied to annual spending on a Macy’s Credit Card. The return policy page doesn’t say that mail returns are free only at certain tiers; it says they’re free for Star Rewards members.

Promotions and gifts when you return

Discounts are split proportionally across the items in your order, and your refund reflects the item’s adjusted price, not the original price. If you got a bonus or promotional gift with the purchase, you have to return it with the qualifying items. Without it, the return may be denied or adjusted, with the value of the gift deducted from your refund.

If the price of something you bought drops soon after, you may not need to return it at all: see our guide to price adjustment policies. Macy’s own page says you can request an adjustment within 10 days of your order date if the lower price is an advertised Macy’s price, and that promotional discounts can’t be combined with a price adjustment.

How long does a Macy’s refund take?

Macy’s says refunds are typically processed within 7 days after your return is received. Exceptions in its policy:

• Jewelry and watches: inspection can take up to 14 business days before the refund is processed.
• Furniture and mattresses: refunds are processed after items are received and inspected, and timing depends on your bank or payment method.
• Third-party seller items: the refund comes after the seller receives and processes the return.
• DoorDash orders: they go back to a Macy’s store only, and DoorDash issues the refund 1 to 5 business days after processing.

Holiday returns

Macy’s return page refers to an “Extended Holiday Return Policy” for eligible purchases, but doesn’t give the dates on that page. The only specific dates we could confirm were for DoorDash orders: orders placed from October 5 through December 31, 2026 can be returned through January 31, 2027. Check Macy’s holiday return page for the dates that apply to a regular order.

Tips before you return to Macy’s

• Leave the tags on until you’re sure. Items with no tags aren’t in original condition.
• Count 30 days from delivery for online orders, not the order date.
• Take it to a store if you’re not a Star Rewards member, and skip the $9.99.
• Mailing a Last Act item, a gift card or a personalized item won’t work: they’re final sale.
