How PayPal fees work in the US
When you get paid for a sale (a “commercial transaction”), PayPal takes a percentage of the amount and, for most payment types, a fixed fee based on the currency. If the buyer is in another country, an international fee is added to the percentage.
Fee = amount × (domestic rate + international rate) + fixed fee
| Payment type | Rate |
|---|---|
| Send/receive money for Goods and Services | 2.99% (no fixed fee) |
| PayPal Checkout, Guest Checkout, invoicing, Pay with Venmo | 3.49% + fixed fee |
| Standard credit and debit card payments | 2.99% + fixed fee |
| QR code transactions | 2.29% + fixed fee |
| PayPal Pay Later options | 4.99% + fixed fee |
| Fixed fee | $0.49 (0.39 EUR · 9.00 MXN) |
| International commercial transactions | +1.50% |
| Currency conversion on payments | 4.00% (or as disclosed in the transaction) |
Example: a $100 sale
Goods and Services payment: $100 × 2.99% = $2.99; you receive $97.01. PayPal Checkout: $100 × 3.49% + $0.49 = $3.98; you receive $96.02. Add 1.50% if the buyer is outside the US.
How much to charge to receive an exact amount
Because the fee is a share of the total, you can’t just add it on top. Use amount to charge = (amount you want + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate). To net $100 through Checkout: ($100 + $0.49) ÷ 0.9651 = $104.12.
