How to calculate sales tax

Add tax to a price

Total = price × (1 + rate). At an 8.25% rate, a $50 item costs $50 × 1.0825 = $54.13, of which $4.13 is tax.

Find the price before tax

Don’t subtract the rate from the total. Divide instead: price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate). From a $54.13 total at 8.25%: $54.13 ÷ 1.0825 = $50.00.

Which rate should I use?

Sales tax in the US is set by states and, in many places, by counties and cities too, so the rate you pay is the combined rate where the sale happens (or where an online order is shipped). The calculator doesn’t look up rates; enter the rate printed on your receipt or published by your state’s revenue department.

Tip Comparing a sale price? Use our discount calculator, which can add tax after the discount.

FAQ

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal (8.25% = 0.0825). Add the result to the price for the total.

How do I find the price before tax?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. For 7% tax, divide by 1.07.

Why doesn’t the calculator know my rate?

Combined rates depend on the state, county and city, and change over time. Rather than show a rate we can’t verify for your address, we let you enter the rate from your receipt or your state’s revenue department.

Is sales tax charged before or after a discount?

Usually on the price you actually pay after a store discount, but rules for coupons vary by state. Check your receipt.
