How eBay calculates selling fees

eBay charges a final value fee when an item sells. It’s a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which eBay defines as the item price plus shipping, sales tax and other applicable fees, so tax the buyer pays still counts toward the fee. On top of that comes a per-order fee: $0.30 for orders of $10.00 or less and $0.40 for orders over $10.00.

CategoryFinal value fee
Most categories13.6% up to $7,500 per item · 2.35% on the portion over $7,500
Books, Movies & Music15.3% up to $7,500 · 2.35% over
Trading cards13.25% up to $7,500 · 2.35% over
Guitars & Basses6.7% up to $7,500 · 2.35% over
Sneakers $150 or more8% of the total, no per-order fee

Example: a $50 item with $8 shipping and 8% tax

Total amount of the sale = $50 + $8 + $4.64 tax = $62.64. Final value fee = 13.6% × $62.64 = $8.52. Per-order fee = $0.40. Total eBay fees: $8.92. Because the tax goes to the state, you keep $50 + $8 − $8.92 = $49.08 before your own costs.

Listing (insertion) fees

eBay says most casual sellers list for free: you pay a $0.35 insertion fee per listing only after more than 250 listings a month.

Heads up eBay adds an international fee when the buyer’s delivery or registered address is outside the US; the page we read doesn’t state the percentage, so the calculator leaves it out. Optional listing upgrades, promoted listings and store subscriptions also change your costs. Categories not listed here may have different rates.
