Kohl’s doesn’t insist on a receipt, and its standard window runs 90 days or more. The details that trip people up are the shorter windows for a handful of categories, what happens to Kohl’s Cash when you return something that earned it, and the difference between returning in a store and sending something back by mail.
Based on Kohl’s own return policy page and its returns help page, read on Oct 3, 2026. The policy page shows no “last updated” date. We couldn’t find a Kohl’s page saying how Kohl’s Rewards points are treated on returns; that is marked below.
What is the Kohl’s return policy?
In short: bring it back within the window, keep the item in returnable condition, and Kohl’s will refund the original form of payment. The window depends on how you paid and what you bought.
- Paid with a Kohl’s Card: within 120 days of purchase.
- Any other payment type: within 90 days of purchase.
- Some categories: 30 days, and one category (baby registry items) longer, as the table below shows.
Kohl’s says most returns are accepted with or without a receipt. Items bought in a store can only be returned at a store, while eligible online purchases can also go back by mail.

Kohl’s return policy: how many days do you have?
| What you bought / how you paid | Return window |
|---|---|
| Most items, paid with a Kohl’s Card | 120 days from purchase |
| Most items, any other payment type | 90 days from purchase |
| Premium electronics and watches | 30 days (original packaging and a valid receipt or account lookup) |
| Sephora at Kohl’s | 30 days; no returns without a receipt; final sale products can’t be returned |
| Mattresses | 30 days |
| Baby registry items (verified, eligible purchases from open registries) | Up to 365 days from purchase |
| Beverages, opened or unsealed breast pumps and accessories, trading cards, blind box items | Not refundable |
Kohl’s doesn’t define “premium electronics” on its policy page, so if you’re buying a pricey gadget, check the product page and assume the 30-day window until you’ve confirmed otherwise.
When does the clock start?
This depends on how you got the item, and it matters if you’re cutting it close:
- Bought in a store: the window starts on the purchase date.
- Shipped to you: the window starts on the ship date, not the day it arrives.
- Buy online, pick up in store (BOPUS) or buy online, ship to store (BOSS): the window starts when the order is ready for pickup.
Kohl’s return policy without a receipt
You don’t need the paper receipt. Kohl’s says most returns are accepted with or without one, and that an associate can look up your purchase using any of these:
- Your order number
- Your Kohl’s Rewards account
- The credit card number you paid with
- The return barcode in the Kohl’s app
If the associate finds the sale, the return is handled as normal, within the same window. If the purchase can’t be found, you receive a Kohl’s Merchandise Credit for the lowest discounted 13-week sale price. A valid photo ID may be required for these returns.
In practice, the quickest way to avoid the lower credit is to have a lookup option ready: pay with a card you can show, or use your Kohl’s Rewards account at the register so every purchase is attached to it. For the general rules that apply across stores, see our guide on returning items without a receipt.
Gifts and exchanges
Gift items can be exchanged with a gift receipt within the applicable return window. If you don’t have a gift receipt, you receive a Kohl’s Merchandise Credit for the lowest discounted 13-week sale price, the same as a no-record return.
Returning online orders: store or mail
You have two routes for something you bought on Kohls.com or in the app.
- Return in a store. Bring the item to any Kohl’s store and go to the Customer Service counter. Kohl’s lists in-store returns as free.
- Return by mail. Start the return online (the returns help page has a “Start a Return” button), pack the item and send it back. You pay the postage: Kohl’s says it does not provide prepaid return labels.
The reverse doesn’t work: items purchased in a store can only be returned to a store, never by mail.
Large items that ship by freight
Bigger items that needed freighted delivery (Kohl’s calls these “threshold” deliveries) can’t be taken to a store. They have to go back through a delivery service. Shipping costs and surcharges are non-refundable, and a 15% restocking fee applies unless the item is defective.
What a mail return costs you
| Cost | Who pays |
|---|---|
| Return postage for a normal mail return | You |
| Original shipping costs and surcharges | Non-refundable |
| Restocking fee on freight (threshold) items | 15%, unless the item is defective |
| Return to a Kohl’s store | Free |
If the item is heavier or pricier than the postage is worth, a store return avoids the problem completely. And if you bought it from Amazon, not Kohl’s, the process is different; see our guide to Amazon returns at Kohl’s.

Kohl’s Cash and returns: what happens to it
This is the part of the policy people miss. Kohl’s Cash is earned on a purchase, so returning part of that purchase can reduce it. The policy covers three situations.
1. You return items that earned Kohl’s Cash you haven’t spent
If the return drops your total below the amount needed to earn the Kohl’s Cash, it may be reduced or voided. Kohl’s gives this example: you spend $100 and earn $20 in Kohl’s Cash. You return a $60 item, which leaves $40, below the earning threshold. Because you haven’t used the $20 yet, it is voided.
2. You return items that earned Kohl’s Cash you’ve already spent
The refund is reduced by the Kohl’s Cash that is no longer earned. Kohl’s example: you spend $100, earn $20, and use that $20 on a later purchase. You then return $50 of the original order. The remaining $50 only earns $10, so your refund is reduced by $10, the unearned portion.
3. You return items you bought with Kohl’s Cash
You get the Kohl’s Cash back. If the coupon is still valid, the amount is added back to that same coupon. If it has expired, Kohl’s issues a new Kohl’s Cash coupon for the same amount. Kohl’s example: $20 of Kohl’s Cash used on a sweater is credited back if you return the sweater.
For how Kohl’s Cash, coupons and Rewards stack on a purchase in the first place, see our Kohl’s coupons guide.
What about Kohl’s Rewards points?
Kohl’s advertises 5% back in Kohl’s Rewards on every purchase. The Kohl’s Cash and Rewards FAQ says only that a return can affect Kohl’s Cash and points to the return policy article, and that article has no section on Rewards points. We couldn’t verify whether Rewards points are reversed on a return, so ask at the counter or check your account after the refund posts.
How long does a Kohl’s refund take?
| How you returned it | What Kohl’s says |
|---|---|
| In a store, paid by credit card | The refund appears “within about seven days,” and may take longer depending on your bank’s processing time |
| By mail | Up to 7–10 days after Kohl’s receives your return |
| Purchases paid with EBT | Refunded as Kohl’s Merchandise Credit |
| Mail return with merchandise credit | Credit is mailed to the billing address on file unless you provide another |
Refunds go to the original payment method. If your card refund hasn’t shown up after Kohl’s timeline plus your bank’s, see our guide on how long a refund takes for what to check.
Kohl’s Amazon returns
Kohl’s also takes returns for Amazon orders, but these follow Amazon’s rules, not the Kohl’s return policy above. You start the return in Amazon’s Online Return Center, choose the Kohl’s drop-off, and show the QR code; Amazon, not Kohl’s, issues the refund. Our guide to Kohl’s Amazon returns covers the steps, store hours and what can go wrong.
Returning in store: a quick checklist
- Check the date. Count 90 days (120 with a Kohl’s Card) from the purchase date, the ship date or the date the order was ready for pickup.
- Bring the item, with anything that came with it. If it’s Sephora, premium electronics or a watch, bring the original packaging.
- Bring a way to find the sale: the receipt, your order number, the card you paid with, your Kohl’s Rewards account or the return barcode in the app.
- Bring a photo ID in case the associate asks for one, especially if you don’t have a receipt.
- Go to the Customer Service counter.
- Keep your return receipt until the refund shows up.
Holiday returns
Kohl’s has extended its holiday window in past seasons. For the 2025 season, its corporate announcement said items bought from Oct. 5 to Oct. 31 could be returned through Jan. 31, 2026, with November and December purchases returnable through the end of January, and Sephora purchases made Oct. 31 to Dec. 30 returnable through Jan. 31, 2026. The return policy page we read has no holiday extension in it, and we found no 2026 holiday announcement, so don’t assume the same dates apply this year; check Kohl’s website or a store before relying on one.
Common questions people have at the counter
What is the “lowest discounted 13-week sale price”?
It’s the amount Kohl’s uses for the Merchandise Credit when it can’t find your purchase or you have no gift receipt. Kohl’s doesn’t explain it beyond the name; it reads as the lowest sale price the item had in the last 13 weeks, which may be less than you paid.
Can I return an online order in a store?
Yes. Kohl’s lists in-store returns as free, and you take it to the Customer Service counter. The opposite doesn’t work: a store purchase can’t be mailed back.
Why was my refund smaller than I expected?
The most common reasons in the policy: Kohl’s Cash you earned on the purchase that’s no longer earned after the return, a 15% restocking fee on freight items, or non-refundable shipping costs on a mail return.
