Walmart’s return policy is generous on paper, but the 90-day window you’ve heard about doesn’t apply to everything. Phones, electronics, appliances and anything sold by a third-party seller on Walmart.com follow shorter clocks. This guide breaks down every window, explains what happens when you don’t have a receipt, and shows the fastest way to return an online order.

Based on Walmart’s official return policy, marked “Updated: August 17, 2026”, and Walmart.com help articles. Store managers have final say on individual returns.

How long do you have to return something to Walmart?

The default is 90 days after purchase or after you receive the item. The policy covers Walmart U.S. stores, Walmart.com and Walmart Business. Walmart recommends keeping the packaging and the receipt for at least those 90 days.

What Walmart won’t take back

Walmart and its Marketplace sellers won’t refund or replace these, among others:

  • Alcohol, tobacco, firearms, ammunition, airsoft and BB guns, bows and crossbows, pepper and bear spray.
  • Prescription medications and devices, home diagnostic tests (including COVID-19, ovulation and pregnancy tests) and hygienic medical equipment.
  • Trading cards (opened or unopened) and collectibles such as Labubu items, plus precious metals.
  • Gift cards, prepaid phone and gaming cards, SIM cards, downloadable software and video games.
  • Items bought from dealers or resellers instead of Walmart or Walmart.com directly.

Bundles must come back complete, and anything with a rechargeable battery needs its original battery. Oversized, freight and heavy items can’t be returned to stores.

Returning to Walmart without a receipt

  1. Let the store look it up. Walmart can find store purchases with the debit or credit card you paid with, and online orders with your phone number or email.
  2. If nothing can be found, you’ll need a valid government-issued photo ID and the refund comes as a Walmart gift card. In store, you can also exchange the item or send it to the manufacturer for repair if that’s available.
  3. Expect limits. Walmart caps the number and frequency of no-receipt returns (it doesn’t publish the exact number) and can refuse returns it considers excessive or abusive.

Gift receipts work differently: with one, you can exchange, take a Walmart gift card or have the money credited to the sender’s original payment.

How to return a Walmart.com order

  1. Go to Purchase History in the app or on Walmart.com and select View details on the order.
  2. Select Start a return, choose the items and the reason.
  3. Choose a refund or a replacement.
  4. Pick how to send it back and submit.

Your return options:

  • In store or curbside: no printing and no repackaging.
  • Free by mail with a printed USPS or FedEx label.
  • FedEx Office drop-off with no label to print.
  • FedEx pickup, and home pickup for Walmart+ members (“Returns from Home”).

Marketplace items are returned to the seller: start the return in your account, pack the item and drop it at FedEx, or bring eligible items to a Walmart store, which can package them for you.

Shipping isn’t always refunded. Walmart says outbound shipping charges aren’t always refunded when you return an item.

When will you get your refund?

You paid withRefund goes toTypical timing
Cash or checkCashImmediately in store
Credit cardSame card (or a Walmart gift card)Up to 10 business days (Walmart’s Refunds help page says up to 7)
Debit card with PINSame card, gift card or cashUp to 7 business days
Walmart gift card, EBT, Walmart CashSameUp to 3 hours
PayPal or prepaid cardsSameUp to 30 business days

If the original card can’t take the refund, store purchases go to a gift card or Walmart Balance, and online purchases to Walmart Balance.

Holiday returns

Most items bought between October 1 and December 31 can be returned until January 31. Some exceptions may apply, according to Walmart: for example wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products and select seasonal and luxury goods.

Tips to avoid a denied return

  • Check the seller before you buy. Items sold by Walmart follow Walmart’s own windows (90 days for most items); a Marketplace seller usually gives 30 days and may charge a restocking fee.
  • Keep the box for 90 days, especially for electronics and anything you might return.
  • Wipe and unlink devices before returning phones, tablets or laptops.
  • Save digital receipts in the app. With a receipt or order number, the refund goes back to your original payment; with no proof of purchase at all, you get a Walmart gift card.
