Home Depot’s return policy looks simple (90 days) until you return a generator, a patio set or a refrigerator. Then the clock changes, and without a receipt the refund can change too. This guide covers the standard window, the exceptions that trip people up, what happens when the receipt is gone, and how online orders come back.

How we checked this guide (Oct 3, 2026): homedepot.com’s Return Policy and Receipt Lookup pages load their text dynamically, so we could not read the full wording. What we could read on homedepot.com was an older help text (90-day standard, credit timing, gift returns) and the Pro Xtra pages. The category list and no-receipt details come from consumer-finance and shopping sites that summarize Home Depot’s policy: dealnews (updated Aug 31, 2026), ConsumerAffairs (Jul 1, 2026), Store Policies (modified Oct 1, 2026), Return Policies Info (verified Nov 24, 2025) and GOBankingRates (Dec 1, 2025). They agree on most points and disagree on a few, which we flag. Confirm the details for your item on homedepot.com or at the Returns desk.

What is the Home Depot return policy?

Most products can be returned for a refund within 90 days of purchase. A legacy help text on homedepot.com says it plainly: “Most products have a 90-day-from-purchase return policy.” The other sources add the usual condition: items should be new or unused, and you need proof of purchase. Open or used tools, damaged goods and special orders are where problems start.

The sources we read do not say whether the 90 days run from the order date or the delivery date for online orders, so count from the earlier one. Your order confirmation shows the purchase date.

Tip Photograph the sealed box and the receipt before you start a big project. If the part turns out to be wrong, the return stays about the part.

How a Home Depot return works

How many days do you have to return at Home Depot, by category?

This is the part that matters. The sources agree on the shape of the list:

Bar chart of Home Depot return windows: 2 days for major appliances, 7 for gas generators and air conditioners, 30 for furniture and electronics, 90 for most items and 365 for plants and Home Depot credit card purchases
Main return windows reported for Home Depot. The 48-hour appliance rule is shown as 2 days.
WindowWhat it covers (as reported)Notes
48 hoursMajor appliances: refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers and some microwavesDescribed as the window to report damage or defects. Home Depot’s support line handles appliance claims; do not wait.
7 daysDehumidifiers, gas pressure washers, air conditioners and portable gas generatorsItems must be unused, in factory-sealed packaging. Most sources say this; dealnews lists generators at 30 days. Confirm for your model.
30 daysFurniture, gas-powered equipment and tractors, consumer electronics (TVs, computers), paint sprayersGas-powered items are described as returnable only unused and factory-sealed.
90 daysMost other merchandiseStandard window.
365 daysPerennials, trees, roses and shrubsReported as a satisfaction guarantee. One source says store credit after 90 days.
Up to 365 daysItems paid with a Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, Pro Xtra Credit Card or Commercial AccountApplies to items that would otherwise get the 90-day window, not to the shorter exceptions.

The rows that disagree between sources are the 7-day and 30-day generator and equipment rules. When two websites differ, the shorter number is the safe one: plan on 7 days for a portable gas generator until the Returns desk tells you otherwise.

Can you return a generator to Home Depot?

Portable gas generators are the item people ask about most, and the answer depends on the type. Reported rules:

  • Portable gas generators: 7 days in most of the sources we read, unused and factory-sealed. dealnews lists generators “unused and in their original factory-sealed packaging” under 30 days.
  • Whole-house (standby) generators: not returnable, according to dealnews and Return Policies Info.
  • Opened or fueled units: expect a refusal. The point of the factory-sealed condition is that the engine has never run.
Heads up If you need a generator for a storm, do not assume you can use it and return it. The reported rule is the opposite: unused, still sealed, within a very short window.

Does Home Depot accept returns on furniture, plants and paint?

  • Furniture: 30 days in every source. Assembled or damaged pieces are the risk.
  • Plants: trees, shrubs, roses and perennials carry a 365-day guarantee, according to dealnews and others. Keep the tag and the receipt, because a nursery return without proof is the one most likely to end in store credit. Cut flowers are listed as non-returnable.
  • Paint: custom-tinted paint is listed as non-returnable for a change of mind. ConsumerAffairs adds that Home Depot generally corrects a color-mixing error at no cost. Ask before you open the can.
  • Other items sources list as non-returnable: gift cards, utility trailers, product samples and labor, delivery or installation services. Items with flammable liquids or gases are also reported as excluded.

Home Depot return policy without a receipt

You can often return without the paper receipt, but not always at the same value.

  1. Let Home Depot find the sale. The sources say the store can look up purchases paid with a credit card, debit card or check. How far back they can look differs by source: dealnews says 90 days, Simply Wise says 24 months. Ask the associate which applies to your purchase.
  2. Bring the card you paid with (or the phone, for mobile wallet payments) and a good guess at the date and amount. Associates use those details to find the transaction.
  3. Show a government-issued photo ID. Every source we read says a driver’s license or other government ID is required for an unreceipted return.
  4. Know what you will get. If the purchase cannot be found, Return Policies Info and Simply Wise quote the policy as refunding at store credit at the lowest advertised price. That can be less than you paid.
Heads up Store Policies reports that Home Depot uses a third-party refund verification system and that all returns are subject to approval. Nobody can promise you an outcome at the counter. If the system declines it, the associate usually cannot override it. We explain why on our return without receipt guide.

Cash purchases and the Pro Xtra trick

Cash leaves no card trail. One source (Simply Wise) says cash purchases can generally not be reprinted unless you are a Pro Xtra member who gave your phone number at checkout. On homedepot.com, Pro Xtra is described only as a free loyalty program with business tools, and we could not read a page confirming purchase tracking, so treat this as a tip to verify. Linking a card or phone number to a free Home Depot account before a big purchase is cheap insurance either way, and ConsumerAffairs recommends exactly that.

Gift returns

The old homedepot.com help text says that a Home Depot gift card is issued for any gift returned. dealnews says gift returns receive store credit rather than a direct refund. Either way, do not expect the original payment method to be credited if you did not buy the item.

Receipt lookup: how to get a copy of your Home Depot receipt

Home Depot has a page titled “How to Get Your Home Depot Receipt” at homedepot.com/c/receipt-lookup. We could see the title and a pointer to the Customer Service Center and the app, but not the steps. Based on what the press sources describe, these are the places to look:

  • Your online account order history for website orders and for in-store purchases tied to your account.
  • The email confirmation or shipping confirmation for online orders. Return Policies Info and Store Policies say that is enough, together with the card you used and an ID.
  • The store’s Returns desk, which can reprint a receipt for card purchases. Simply Wise says to bring the card (or the device used for a mobile wallet) and be ready to give the store, date, amount and an item description.
Tip Photograph the receipt in the parking lot. A phone picture is not an official receipt, but it gives the associate the date, register and last four card digits to search with.

Can you return a Home Depot online order to a store?

Yes, for most items. ConsumerAffairs says most online purchases can be returned directly to your local store, and Store Policies lists what to bring: the receipt or shipping confirmation email, the card used, and valid ID. Credit for an in-store return is reported as instant.

Returns by mail work differently. The legacy homedepot.com text says credit for a warehouse return is issued after the return is received and processed, and that original shipping and return shipping are refunded if the error was Home Depot’s. Return Policies Info reports about 7 business days of processing, then up to 10 business days for your bank. Simply Wise reports that Home Depot usually supplies a free UPS label for most online purchases, which is worth checking in your order before you pay for postage.

Large items, special orders and anything delivered on a pallet often have their own return rules. For special orders, Return Policies Info mentions a 15% restocking fee. We found that on one source only, so ask before you order.

How long does a Home Depot refund take?

How you paidWhat the sources say
In store, any tenderProcessed immediately; cash back is instant
Credit or debit cardUp to 10 business days to appear at your bank (GOBankingRates, Return Policies Info)
Mail returnAbout 7 business days after Home Depot receives the package, plus bank time
Store creditUp to 24 hours (one source)
PayPalUp to 30 business days (one source)

For how banks and card networks handle these delays across stores, see our refund timing guide.

Is Home Depot’s return policy better than Lowe’s?

They are close. Lowe’s also gives 90 days on most items and a 48-hour window for major appliances, and it does not accept returns without proof of purchase at all, though it accepts a card, phone number or account as proof. See our Lowe’s return policy guide. The Home Depot advantage is the year-long window on plants and on purchases made with its own credit cards.

Tips before you return

  • Set your deadline on day one. Our return deadline calculator counts 48 hours, 7, 30 or 90 days for you.
  • Keep sealed tools sealed until you are sure they are what you need.
  • Bring accessories and the box. Missing parts are the most common reason for a partial refund.
  • Carry your photo ID even with a receipt, since the associate may ask.
  • Ask for the form of refund before you hand over the item. Credit at the lowest advertised price is a different outcome from a card refund.
