IKEA’s famous “365 days” only applies to products you haven’t opened. Once you’ve unboxed or assembled furniture, the window drops to 180 days, and mattresses follow their own exchange rule. This guide covers the U.S. policy only; IKEA’s rules differ by country.
Based on IKEA United States customer service pages (return policy, mattress “Love it or exchange it” and refund articles), checked Sep 29, 2026.
How long do you have to return to IKEA?
| Product | Window | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| New and unopened | 365 days | Full refund with proof of purchase |
| Opened or assembled | 180 days | Full refund with proof of purchase; original packaging not required |
| Mattresses (new) | 90 days | One exchange for another mattress |
| Plants, cut fabric, custom countertops, as-is products | Not accepted | No return |
IKEA’s wording for the main rule: “If you’re not totally satisfied with your IKEA purchase you can return new and unopened products within 365 days, together with your proof of purchase, for a full refund.” For opened items: “You may also return open products within 180 days, with your proof of purchase, for a full refund.”
What IKEA won’t take back
- Plants
- Cut fabric
- Custom countertops
- As-is products (items from the As-is section)
IKEA’s pages aren’t consistent on as-is items: the return policy says they aren’t accepted, while IKEA’s refund article says as-is returns are refunded to a return card. If you might need to return an as-is item, ask the Exchanges & returns desk before you buy.
IKEA also refuses refunds or exchanges when merchandise is “modified from its original form when purchased, dirty, stained, or damaged.”
IKEA mattress return policy: is it 365 days?
No. There is no 365-day return period for a mattress you’ve slept on. IKEA US offers “Love it or exchange it”:
- You can exchange your mattress once within 90 days if you don’t love it, as long as it isn’t dirty, marked or damaged.
- IKEA recommends allowing at least one month for your body to get used to a new mattress before deciding.
- If the replacement costs more, you pay the difference. If it costs less, IKEA credits the difference to an IKEA refund card.
- If your mattress came through IKEA’s Home Delivery Service, collection and delivery of the replacement are free of charge.
- The policy covers all new mattresses but not bed bases, bed slats or mattress toppers.
IKEA mattresses also come with a free 10-year limited warranty.
IKEA doesn’t say whether a mattress still sealed in its original packaging falls under the 365-day unopened rule. If you have one, ask the Exchanges & returns desk before assuming a refund.
How to return something to IKEA
In store
- Gather what you need: the merchandise, a photo ID, the receipt (or online order confirmation) and the card you used for the purchase.
- Use the Exchanges & returns entrance at your local IKEA and follow the signs to the Exchanges & returns desk.
- Choose your refund. With a receipt, the money goes back to your original form of payment, or to an IKEA refund card if you prefer.

Online orders can be returned in store too, and IKEA also lets you start a return online.
By FedEx or pickup
- Small items: contact IKEA’s Customer Support Center to return via FedEx at any of more than 50,000 FedEx drop-off locations.
- Delivered items: if your items were delivered from the store and you need a pickup, contact the Customer Support Center. IKEA notes that removal and pickup services vary by market and that items must be placed at a covered porch, garage or doorstep.
IKEA’s return pages don’t list prices for FedEx returns or home pickups, so ask the Customer Support Center about any charge before you book.
IKEA returns without a receipt
You need proof of purchase for both the 365-day and 180-day refunds. If you lost the receipt but scanned your IKEA Family card when you paid, log in to your IKEA Family profile to pull up your purchase history. Otherwise, contact IKEA and it will try to locate the receipt. IKEA’s return policy also asks for a valid government-issued photo ID.
How IKEA refunds your money
- With a receipt: to the original form of payment, or an IKEA refund card if you prefer.
- Refund card only: returns of custom-made worktops, food and moderately used products are refunded to a return card, according to IKEA’s refund article.
IKEA’s pages don’t state how many days a card refund takes to post; check with your bank if it hasn’t appeared after a return.
Which IKEA window applies to you?
| Situation | Result under IKEA US policy |
|---|---|
| Bookcase still in its sealed box, 10 months after purchase, with receipt | Full refund (within 365 days, unopened) |
| Assembled dresser, 4 months after purchase, clean and undamaged, with receipt | Full refund (within 180 days, opened) |
| Same dresser, 7 months after purchase | Past the 180-day window for opened products |
| Mattress you’ve slept on for 6 weeks, clean and unmarked | One exchange for another mattress (within 90 days) |
| Houseplant or a length of cut fabric | Not returnable |
Tips before you return to IKEA
- Decide early on furniture you’ve built. Assembly moves you from the 365-day clock to the 180-day clock.
- Scan your IKEA Family card on every purchase so you can find receipts later.
- Bring every piece. Missing parts or promotional items can reduce or block the refund.
- Only U.S. purchases. This guide covers products bought from IKEA U.S. stores or the IKEA U.S. website.
