TJ Maxx’s return policy is short, but the details decide whether you walk out with a refund or a merchandise credit: which clock applies, whether you have the receipt and how you send an online order back. Here’s each case.
Based on the return-policy page on T.J. Maxx’s own site (mobile.tjmaxx.com, an older page that still carries pandemic-era store-closure wording), checked against ConsumerAffairs’ September 2026 coverage of the same 30- and 40-day windows (checked Sep 29, 2026). The text of the current tjmaxx.com policy pages didn’t load for us, so confirm details there before a big return. T.J. Maxx says its return policies are subject to local, state and federal restrictions.
How many days do you have to return to TJ Maxx?
| Where you bought it | Window | Where to return it |
|---|---|---|
| In a T.J. Maxx store | 30 days from the purchase date | Any open T.J. Maxx store |
| Online at tjmaxx.com | 40 days from the order date | Any open T.J. Maxx store, or by mail |
The online clock starts on the day you order, not the day the package arrives. If shipping takes a week, you really have about a month once it’s in your hands.
What condition do items need to be in?
T.J. Maxx accepts items that are not washed, not worn (aside from trying them on), not damaged or altered, and returned with all hangtags and original packaging. Items that don’t meet those standards are sent back to you at your expense, so don’t cut tags until you’re sure.
TJ Maxx return policy with a receipt
A receipt is what gets you the best outcome, and timing decides which one:
- Within 30 days (store) or 40 days (online): a standard return, as long as the item meets the condition rules above.
- After the window: “Returns with a receipt received outside the returns timeframe may qualify for a merchandise credit.” T.J. Maxx says that credit can be used in store or online at any TJX location, which includes Marshalls.
Note the word “may”: a late return with a receipt isn’t guaranteed, but the policy leaves the door open for store credit.
TJ Maxx return policy without a receipt
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. T.J. Maxx requires the ID plus your name, address and signature.
- Expect merchandise credit, not cash. No-receipt returns are refunded as a non-transferable merchandise credit, meaning only you can use it.
- Spend it in a store. Merchandise credits issued for returns without a receipt can’t be used for online purchases.

Common TJ Maxx return scenarios
| Situation | What the policy says |
|---|---|
| Store purchase, 2 weeks ago, receipt, tags on | Standard return at any open T.J. Maxx store |
| Store purchase, 6 weeks ago, receipt | Past 30 days: may qualify for merchandise credit |
| tjmaxx.com order placed 35 days ago | Still inside 40 days: return in store or by mail |
| Lost the receipt | Non-transferable merchandise credit with photo ID, name, address and signature; usable in stores only |
| Wore it once or cut the tags off | Doesn’t meet the condition rules; the item can be sent back to you |
Returning a gift to TJ Maxx
T.J. Maxx’s policy doesn’t describe gift receipts, so the safe assumption is that a gift without the original receipt follows the no-receipt rules: government-issued photo ID, your name, address and signature, and a non-transferable merchandise credit you can spend only in stores. If the giver can share the receipt and you’re still inside 30 days (40 for an online order), you’re in the standard-return lane instead.
How to return a tjmaxx.com order
T.J. Maxx gives you two ways to send back an online order:
- In store (free). Take the item and your order information to any open T.J. Maxx store within 40 days of the order date. tjmaxx.com advertises “Free Returns In Store.”
- By mail. Use T.J. Maxx’s return-by-mail option from your online order. Check the online return-policy page before you ship: news coverage (ConsumerAffairs, Sep 2026) reports that T.J. Maxx deducts a return shipping and handling fee from mail refunds unless the item is defective, which a store return avoids.
Can you return TJ Maxx items to Marshalls or HomeGoods?
T.J. Maxx’s policy is written around T.J. Maxx stores: store purchases and online orders go back to “any open T.J. Maxx store.” Marshalls and HomeGoods belong to the same company, TJX, but Marshalls’ policy likewise names its own stores, so don’t count on a Marshalls or HomeGoods register taking a T.J. Maxx return. The one confirmed crossover is the merchandise credit you get for a late return with a receipt, which T.J. Maxx says can be used at any TJX location.
For the Marshalls rules (also 30 and 40 days), see our Marshalls return policy guide.
Tips to avoid a denied return at TJ Maxx
- Put the receipt in your wallet or photograph it. It’s the difference between a return and a store-only credit.
- Count 30 days from the receipt date, not from when you first wore or unpacked the item.
- Keep hangtags and packaging until you’re sure you’re keeping it.
- Return online orders in store to avoid shipping costs and delays.
- Carry your photo ID if you don’t have the receipt: without it, a no-receipt return can’t be processed.
Shopping around? Compare with Target and Walmart, which give 90 days on most items, or Ross, another off-price chain with a 30-day window.
