Is SHEIN or Temu Better? Returns, Shipping, Refunds and Protections Side by Side

“Is SHEIN or Temu better?” can’t be answered with a single word, because the two stores’ written rules differ on different things. This guide puts the published policies next to each other, row by row, and works through what the numbers mean in practice. It doesn’t cover prices or product quality, which no policy page can tell you.

What can’t be returned

SHEIN’s list is categorical; Temu’s uses the word “some” repeatedly, which means the product page or return screen decides. In both cases, check before you open the package.

Free shipping and delivery times

SHEIN’s numbers

SHEIN’s Shipping Information page gives the clearest thresholds of the two. Standard shipping is free on orders over $29 on most days, over $15 on Sundays and Thursdays, and over $15 on your very first order. Below the line it is $3.99. Express is $12.90 under $139 and $7.90 at $139 or more; there is no free express option on the page. Only items shipped directly by SHEIN count toward the threshold. For timing, the page showed standard with 77.1% of orders delivered within 7 business days and express with 79.23% within 6 business days. Temu’s numbers

Temu’s Shipping Info page says you may choose standard or express “depending on the items in your order and your location,” that it may take 1–3 days to process an order, and that you will get a shipment notification with the delivery time for each package. It does not state a free-shipping threshold, fees or a delivery benchmark. The Contact Us page lists “Free shipping” with the note “Excludes items shipped from sellers,” and the shipping page says the delivery time and cost appear on your order confirmation page. We can’t give you a Temu threshold from an official page.

One practical consequence of SHEIN’s weekday rule: a $25 cart (not a first order) costs $3.99 to ship on a Monday under the published rules, and nothing on a Thursday or Sunday.

Refund timing: who pays back faster?

The two stores describe refunds in different ways, so the numbers don’t line up one for one.

The fastest money at either store is store credit, and both treat it as spend-only. For a card refund, SHEIN gives a more granular schedule, while Temu gives a single range. Our refund timing guide explains why your bank adds days even after a store approves the refund.

Buyer protection: what each store promises

• SHEIN, faulty or damaged: contact customer service within 90 days of the order date; SHEIN says it will investigate and offer a solution, including a refund if applicable.
• SHEIN, not received: contact customer service within 45 days of the payment date, or 45 days of the delivery date shown on your tracking page if it says delivered. The Terms set a shorter 14-day window for loss or damage claims against the carrier.
• SHEIN, late delivery: an optional On-Time Delivery Service pays 500 points ($5 value) if you tick it at checkout and miss the date.
• Temu, not received: contact customer service within 90 days of the order date; the return policy has a “package shows delivered but not received” refund option.
• Temu, published promises: the Contact Us page lists a “Delivery guarantee” with “Refund for any issues” and “Price adjustment within 30 days.” We couldn’t read the terms behind either, so confirm them in your account.

The shared limit is the contract. Both stores’ terms require binding arbitration and a class-action waiver, each with a 30-day opt-out by written notice. That makes a card dispute the practical fallback at either store. The CFPB says a written billing error notice on a credit card is due within 60 calendar days after the charge appeared on your statement. For debit cards, check your issuer’s rules.

Who runs SHEIN and Temu in the US?

SHEIN’s US Terms of Use name SHEIN US Services, LLC; its federal recalls are filed by SHEIN Distribution Corporation of Los Angeles; and the wider group is headquartered in Singapore. Temu’s Terms name Whaleco Inc., “a Delaware company,” at Suite 355, 31 St. James Avenue, Boston, MA. Temu’s own Contact Us page says that address is for correspondence only and that no returns are accepted there. Our verified Temu guide identifies PDD as its parent. Legal record: how the two compare on file

These are actions taken or announced, as documented in our two verified guides. A lawsuit is an allegation, not a finding.

We have not weighed these against each other, because the matters differ in kind and size and most are unresolved. Both companies have US enforcement history, and both have contested at least some of it.

Which one fits which situation, by the rules alone

1. You may want to return something late: Temu’s written window is 90 days from purchase against SHEIN’s 30 from delivery, unless the item is one of Temu’s shorter electronics categories.
2. You want store credit quickly: SHEIN says Wallet refunds arrive within 1 hour. Temu says credit is faster than a card but gives no figure.
3. You want a card refund with a predictable schedule: SHEIN publishes stage-by-stage times per payment method; Temu gives one range of 5–14 business days, up to 30.
4. You’re ordering a small basket: SHEIN’s $29 line (or $15 on Sunday, Thursday or your first order) is published; Temu’s cost appears at checkout.
5. You’re buying underwear, jewelry or accessories: SHEIN says they can’t be returned; Temu limits only “some” underwear orders. Check the product page of either.
6. You need to report a missing parcel: Temu’s published window is 90 days from the order, SHEIN’s is 45 days from payment.

None of this speaks to price, quality or how well each store follows its own rules, which varies by order.
