Temu’s return rules are friendlier than most marketplaces on paper: a long window and a free first return. The details that trip people up are the 14-day shipping deadline, the fee on repeat returns from one order, and the amounts Temu won’t refund. This guide covers the US policy as Temu publishes it.
Sources: Temu’s US Return and Refund Policy (page shows “Last Updated: September 17, 2026 PDT”), Temu’s Terms of Use (last updated November 7, 2025), Temu’s Shipping Info and Contact Us pages, and the CFPB’s guidance on credit card disputes. Temu’s Help Center and Purchase Protection pages didn’t load in our research, so anything that lives only there (exact refund steps in the app, the full delivery-delay compensation terms) is marked “confirm in your account.”
Temu return policy: how long do you have?
Temu’s policy says you can return items within 90 days of purchase, “with some exceptions.” The clock runs from the purchase date, not the delivery date, which matters if your order took weeks to arrive from an overseas warehouse. For most electronics, the policy says the window is 45, 60 or 90 days from the date of purchase, depending on the seller, so check the product page before buying a gadget.

Are Temu returns free?
Yes, once per order. Temu’s wording: “Return shipping is free on your first return of one or multiple returnable items for EVERY order within the return window.” That means you can send back several items from the same order in a single return at no shipping cost.
For the second and subsequent refunds from the same order, Temu deducts $7.99 plus tax (the tax depends on the shipping address) from your refund. The policy also warns that the pickup return method “may charge for an additional fee.”
How to return items to Temu, step by step

- Sign in and open “Your Orders.” Find the order, select the item or items you want to return and choose the reason.
- Pick how you’ll send it back. Temu’s policy describes two routes: a prepaid return label you print and tape to the outside of the package, or a return code. With Happy Returns, “you do not need to pack the items”; you bring the items and the code to the drop-off location.
- Drop the package off. The policy lists Happy Returns, FedEx, USPS and UPS locations as drop-off options. Which ones appear for you depends on your address and the items.
- Get it postmarked within 14 days. Temu states the package must be postmarked within 14 days after you submit the return, “otherwise the return process will be terminated.”
- Wait for the refund. Depending on the refund type, it’s issued before you ship, after drop-off or after inspection (see below). Keep your drop-off receipt until the money arrives.
Temu’s policy doesn’t describe a QR-code return, so don’t expect the Amazon-style flow described in our Amazon return policy guide; use whichever label or code your return screen gives you.
What Temu says you can’t return
The policy lists these as non-returnable:
- Clothing that has been worn, washed or damaged after delivery, or that has had its tags or hygiene stickers removed.
- Groceries and food, with an exception for eligible fresh items that arrive damaged, which must be reported within 72 hours.
- Some health and personal care items.
- Some free gifts and some customized products.
- Some underwear orders.
The word “some” is Temu’s. The product page or the return screen tells you whether a specific item qualifies, so check before you open a package you might send back.
Temu refund time: how long does it take?
Temu says refunds to your original payment account “can take 5-14 business days (up to 30 days),” depending on your financial institution. Refunds to Temu credit are “faster than your original payment method.” The policy describes three refund types (instant, advance and standard) and two payout routes (Temu credit or your original payment method):
| Refund type | When Temu issues it | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Instant refund | Before you ship the items back | Temu says it “will issue the refund before you have returned the items.” |
| Advance refund | After you drop the package off | Granted “based on your shopping history and at our sole discretion.” If the items never arrive, Temu may charge your original payment method. |
| Standard refund | After the item is received and passes quality inspection | The default for most returns. |
| Temu credit | Faster than a card refund | “No expiration date,” per the policy. |
| Original payment method | 5–14 business days, up to 30 | Your bank or card issuer controls the last stretch. |

Temu credit vs. refund to your card
When you start a return you can generally choose a Temu credit balance or a credit to your original payment method. The trade-off is simple: credit is faster and doesn’t expire, but it stays inside Temu. If you don’t plan to shop there again soon, take the card refund and accept the longer wait. Check the credit’s terms on your balance screen before choosing it, because we couldn’t confirm in this research whether credit can be redeemed for cash or what it can’t be used on.
What Temu won’t refund
- Used, damaged or incomplete returns. If the item is used or damaged, has missing parts or accessories, or is damaged by poor packaging during return shipping, “the refund will be reduced to compensate for the lost value.” For iPhones, Temu says the refund is adjusted based on quality inspection if the phone shows signs of use or is missing parts.
- Original shipping and import tax when the return isn’t Temu’s or the seller’s fault, and insurance costs.
- Customs, taxes and return shipping you incur. The Terms of Use say the refund “will not cover customs, taxes, or any return shipping costs you may incur.”
- The $7.99 plus tax fee on second and later refunds from the same order.
What if the order never arrives or arrives damaged?
You don’t need to wait for a return label in that case. For a package that “shows delivered but not received,” the policy tells you to find the order in the support center and select that option to apply for a refund. There are separate options for missing items or parts. Temu’s shipping page also references a 90-day period to contact customer service about delivery issues; confirm the current terms in the app, since Temu’s Help Center wouldn’t load for us.

Returns, price adjustment and support: where to ask
Temu’s Contact Us page promotes “Free returns up to 90 days” and a “Price adjustment within 30 days.” The page also lists 24/7 chat support and a Boston mailing address (31 St James Ave, Suite 355) that is “for correspondence purposes only,” so don’t mail returns there. Return packages go to the address on your prepaid label.
If Temu refuses or stalls your refund
- Re-check the postmark rule. A return shipped after 14 days is terminated by Temu’s own terms; if you hit that, ask support to restart it and say why you were late.
- Contact support through chat with your order number, drop-off receipt and tracking number.
- Dispute the charge with your card issuer. Under federal billing-error rules, as the CFPB explains, you must send a written billing error notice within 60 calendar days after the charge appeared on your statement. The issuer has 30 days to acknowledge it and must finish within two billing cycles.
- Know the arbitration clause. Temu’s Terms of Use require binding arbitration and bar class actions, with a 30-day opt-out by written notice to Whaleco Inc. in Boston. That’s a reason to prefer the card dispute over a lawsuit.
Temu vs. other stores: how the policy compares
Temu’s 90 days is three times Amazon’s standard 30-day window (see our Amazon guide). The catch is the inspection step: Temu refunds most returned items only after they’re received and pass quality inspection, so the money can take a while. Compare with the Shein return policy and the Amazon return policy before choosing where to buy a borderline item.
Before you buy: a three-point check
- Electronics: read the return window on the product page; it may be 45 or 60 days, not 90.
- Clothing: try it on without removing tags or hygiene stickers if you might return it.
- Multi-item orders: decide what you’re returning before you start, so everything goes in the free first return.
