H&M keeps its US return rules short: 30 days, free in stores, and a flat fee if you mail an online order back. Most questions people have about it come from what the page leaves out: how long refunds take, what happens without a receipt, and whether members skip the fee. This guide gives you what H&M states, and marks clearly what it doesn’t.
Sources: H&M’s US “Return Policy & Methods” page (no “last updated” date shown), H&M’s US member benefit pages, the H&M Membership Terms & Conditions (dated 29/09/2025 on the page), the US Customer Service and Contact Us pages, and the CFPB’s credit card dispute guidance. Press coverage (Retail Dive and Fortune, September 2023) and two consumer-site guides are used only as support and labeled. H&M’s separate pages for restricted items, refunds and delivery returned server errors during our research, so refund timing, restricted items and the Returns Portal screens are not verified here.
H&M return policy: how many days do you have?
H&M’s wording is “You have 30 days to decide if an item is right for you.” The page adds that it will not accept returns past 30 days “in stores or online.” For online orders the clock is explicit: items sent back to H&M’s warehouse must be postmarked within 30 days of the delivery date, not the order date. That matters if an order arrives late, because you get the full 30 days after it lands.
For items bought in a store, the page doesn’t spell out a start date. The safe assumption is the purchase date on your receipt.
In-store vs. mail returns: which one costs you?
This is the only real decision in the policy. H&M says “in-store returns are always free” and that a flat fee of $5.99 “will be deducted from all mail-in returns of online purchases.”
| In an H&M store | By mail (Returns Portal) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | $5.99 flat, deducted from the refund |
| What you bring or need | Valid receipt, tags attached | Register the return in the Returns Portal online |
| Deadline | 30 days | Postmarked within 30 days of delivery |
| Where | Any H&M store in the US (not Puerto Rico) | Back to H&M’s warehouse |
| Exchanges | Page says to visit any H&M store to make a return or exchange | Not described on the page |
The page doesn’t say what proof an online order needs when you bring it to a store, so bring the order confirmation and the packing slip along with the items and tags, and ask at the register.

H&M online return fee: does it apply to members?
This is where H&M’s own pages disagree, so read it carefully.
- The returns page says the $5.99 fee is deducted from all mail-in returns of online purchases and mentions no member exception.
- H&M’s US member page (hm.com/en_us/member/info) lists “Free online returns” as a member benefit and says Plus members (500 points) get “Free Shipping and Returns” on every order.
- A second US membership page we read lists Core and Plus benefits, shows a free-shipping threshold of $50 (the first page says $25), and mentions no returns perk at all.
- When H&M introduced the fee in 2023, Retail Dive and Fortune both reported that loyalty members were exempt.
Because the pages conflict, we can’t tell you for certain that the fee is waived for you. Before you mail anything, open the H&M app or hm.com while signed in and look at the return option for your order. If the fee line shows $0, you’re covered; if it shows $5.99, take it to a store or ask customer service why your member benefit doesn’t apply.
Joining is free, according to H&M, and you must be at least 16. Two membership rules bear on returns: the terms say the points earned on an item are deducted from your account when you return it, and bonus vouchers aren’t reissued after a return or exchange.
H&M return policy without a receipt
H&M’s returns page tells you to visit a store “with a valid receipt and tags attached.” It does not describe any option for returning without a receipt: no store credit, no ID-based lookup, no manager discretion. One consumer-site guide (The Budget Fashionista, last updated April 30, 2026) goes further and says H&M won’t take a return without the original receipt or an order confirmation, but that’s a third party’s reading, not H&M’s page.
What you can do about a lost receipt:
- Look for a digital copy. H&M says members get digital receipts within 45 minutes of a purchase, so check the app or your member account. Online orders have an order confirmation email.
- Check your card statement. It confirms the date and amount, which helps if a store associate is willing to look the purchase up. H&M doesn’t say they will.
- Ask at the store first. Staff decide what they can process, and you’ll know before you spend time on the trip.
- Don’t cut the tags. Tags are a stated condition for store returns.
For how other retailers handle this, see our guide to returns without a receipt.
How to return an H&M order step by step

Returning in a store
- Check the 30-day window and that the item still has its tags.
- Bring your receipt (or the order confirmation for an online order) and the item.
- Return it at the register in any US H&M store, excluding Puerto Rico. There’s no fee.
- Keep the return receipt until the money reaches your account.
Returning by mail
- Register the return in the Returns Portal on hm.com. The Customer Service page has a “Register a return” option.
- Follow the portal’s instructions for packing and sending. We couldn’t see the label or carrier options, so use whatever the portal gives you.
- Get it postmarked within 30 days of the delivery date.
- Keep the postal receipt and tracking number. Your refund doesn’t start until H&M’s warehouse has the package.
H&M refund time: how long does it take?
H&M’s US returns page says the refund goes to your original form of payment, such as the credit card used for the order, but gives no number of days. Two consumer sites report up to about 14 days (The Krazy Coupon Lady, updated May 21, 2025; The Budget Fashionista, updated April 30, 2026). Treat 14 days as a third-party estimate, not an H&M guarantee.
Your bank adds its own delay after H&M releases the money, so a card statement can lag. Our refund timing guide explains why. A few other points from H&M’s page:
- Shipping and handling aren’t refundable. You get the item price back, less the mail-in fee if one applies.
- Gift cards: if you paid with a gift card, keep it until all returns are complete, because the refund goes back to that card.
- Points and vouchers: as above, member points for a returned item come off your balance.
What you can’t return to H&M
H&M’s returns page links to a separate page for “restricted items,” but that page didn’t load for us and the returns page doesn’t list them. We can’t give you H&M’s official list. Consumer-site guides commonly mention underwear and hosiery, swimwear without its hygiene seal, opened beauty products and “final sale” items, but those are secondary sources and not confirmed here.
The general condition from the returns page is that items come back with tags attached. If the item is damaged, wrong or defective, H&M’s returns page doesn’t describe a separate process, so use customer service rather than the standard return.
How to contact H&M about a return
H&M’s US Contact Us page lists an AI assistant chat available 24/7, live agent chat during business hours, and a toll-free line at (855) 466-7467. The page also suggests trying the FAQ first because calling may not be the fastest option. If you paid with Klarna, H&M says to contact Klarna directly for payment-related questions. Have your order number, the item details and your return confirmation ready.
If H&M doesn’t refund you
- Check the status in your account and compare it with your postal tracking. A refund can’t start before the warehouse scans your package.
- Contact H&M by chat with your order number, tracking number and drop-off or postal receipt.
- Ask your card issuer. The CFPB says to call right away, then send a written billing error notice within 60 calendar days after the charge appeared on your statement. The company then has 30 days to confirm it received your dispute.
H&M vs. other fast-fashion returns
Fees and windows vary by store. For comparison, read the Zara return policy and the Shein return policy. Our no-receipt guide covers what to do when a store won’t take a return without proof of purchase.
Before you buy: a quick checklist
- Keep the tags on until you’re sure. Tags are a stated condition for store returns.
- Save the receipt or confirm the digital copy is in your app.
- Prefer a store if there’s one nearby and the item is cheap.
- Note the date. Mailed returns count from delivery; for store purchases, assume your receipt date.
FAQ
How many days do I have to return something to H&M?
30 days. H&M says it won’t accept returns past 30 days in stores or online. For online orders the package must be postmarked within 30 days of the delivery date.
Is there an H&M online return fee?
Yes. H&M’s US returns page says a flat $5.99 is deducted from all mail-in returns of online purchases. In-store returns are always free. One H&M member page lists free online returns for members, so check your account before mailing.
Can I return H&M items without a receipt?
H&M’s US page says to bring a valid receipt and tags and doesn’t describe a no-receipt option. Look for a digital receipt or order confirmation, and ask the store before you travel.
Can I return an online H&M order in a store?
H&M says in-store returns are always free and that the $5.99 fee applies to mail-in returns of online purchases, which implies store returns of online orders carry no fee. The page doesn’t say what proof of purchase is needed, so bring your order confirmation and packing slip.
How long does an H&M refund take?
H&M’s US returns page gives no timeframe. It says the refund goes to your original payment method. Third-party guides report up to about 14 days; treat that as an estimate and expect your bank to add some time.

No. The returns page says shipping and handling costs are not refundable.
Do H&M members get free returns?
H&M’s member info page lists free online returns for members and free shipping and returns for Plus members (500 points). The returns page doesn’t mention an exception and another membership page doesn’t list the perk, so confirm the fee line at checkout in your account.
What happens to my member points if I return something?
The H&M Membership Terms say the points earned on an item are deducted from your account when you return it, and bonus vouchers aren’t reissued after a return or exchange.
