“Free stuff” is Temu’s strongest hook: it promises you an item for moving a farm, watering a tree or inviting friends. The useful question isn’t whether it’s a trick, it’s what exactly you’re asked to do and what you give in return. This guide separates what’s in the official texts from what only the press reports.
Based on Temu’s US Terms of Use (updated November 7, 2025), US Privacy Policy (updated November 14, 2025; I read only the passages on invitations, games and promotions) and US Return and Refund Policy (September 17, 2026 version), all read on October 3, 2026, plus the FTC’s press release on the INFORM Act case, an FTC alert on giveaway scams and the Nebraska attorney general’s release. The Mexico and Spain material comes from Temu’s Terms of Use for Mexico (in force since 02-25-2026) and Spain (updated 09-23-2026), their privacy policies (Mexico, 01-01-2026; Spain, 05-21-2026), Mexico’s return policy, and statements from the European Commission, the EU consumer protection authorities network, the OCU and PROFECO (the latter through Expansión). The specific conditions of each gift (how many invitees, how many days, who pays shipping) are shown inside the app and require logging in, so I couldn’t read them directly. What follows about how the games work comes from press reports, mostly from Latin America, and I mark it as such. I didn’t verify any US-specific description of the game mechanics.
How do Temu free gifts work?

According to the outlets that have described them (reporting on Temu in Mexico and Colombia), gifts come through three routes:
- Games with tasks. El Tiempo (Colombia) says Temu offers gifts if you complete “challenges” inside the app: logging in daily, feeding fish, watering a farm or growing a cherry tree. According to that report, finishing them can be “tedious” and take up to three months.
- Invitations. SDP Noticias, in its Mexico guide, says the path in the Mexican app is “Tú” → “Gana créditos y regalos gratis” → “Regalos gratis” (roughly “You” → “Earn credits and free gifts” → “Free gifts”), and that the item’s price drops as new users sign up; for a tablet it cites 22 invitees who must be new Temu users. I couldn’t verify the menu names in the English-language app.
- Wheels, giveaways and codes. Enter.co describes games that usually ask you to share links or complete extra tasks, and promo codes with limited availability.
Those figures are what those outlets report, not a rule published by Temu: neither SDP nor El Tiempo cites an official page. If your app shows a different number, that’s the one that counts.
Are Temu free gifts legit, or a scam?
Going only by what can be verified, the honest answer has three parts.
- Rewards exist in the official terms. Temu’s Terms of Use say you may receive “credits, coupons, cash, gifts or other kinds of reward” by using its services (section 12.1 in the US and Mexico terms, section 15.1 in Spain’s).
- They come with conditions. Some are valid only on selected purchases, and in general they can’t be redeemed for cash except where the law requires it. Promotions “may be governed by separate rules,” and if they conflict with the terms, the promotion’s rules prevail (section 3.4 in the US, Mexico and Spain).
- Whether you win depends on those conditions. PROFECO sums it up this way (my translation): in several cases “offers and gifts apply only to certain users, require recommending the platform to other people or meeting additional conditions, such as making minimum purchases.”
In other words, it isn’t a scam in itself, but it isn’t something “free” without meeting a condition either. An Enter.co article ends along the same lines: it describes the offer as a marketing strategy to gain users, and reports that Temu reserves the right to modify or cancel promotions if it detects suspicious activity, according to the policy that outlet cites.
| What you can treat as verified | What is not verified |
|---|---|
| Temu hands out rewards and gifts (official terms) | How many invitees each gift requires and how many users actually receive it |
| Each promotion has its own rules, which prevail | Who pays shipping (the outlets differ) |
| Closing your account cancels your rewards (US and Spain terms) | Whether every gift arrives, and how long it takes |
| PROFECO warns about conditions and fake sites | Complaint numbers about gifts |
What Temu’s terms say about free gifts and rewards
- No cash-out: some rewards can’t be redeemed for cash, except in jurisdictions where the law requires it.
- Rules per promotion: you should read the rules of each type of reward; their specific conditions prevail in a conflict (Spain’s terms, section 15.1).
- Closing your account: “all Content and Rewards associated with your Account will be destroyed and cancelled” (US terms, section 13.2; Spain’s terms, section 16.2, say the same). Temu recommends using them first.
- Returns: Temu’s US return policy (September 17, 2026 version) and Mexico’s policy both list “some free gifts” among the items that can’t be returned. If something arrives wrong, check Temu’s return policy first.
What data you share when you play or invite friends
Taking part isn’t just spending time: it generates information about you. Here is what the Mexican and Spanish privacy policies say.
| Mexico (updated 01-01-2026) | Spain (updated 05-21-2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Phone and/or email as credentials | Phone and email, purchase, payment and shipping data |
| Device and browsing | Model, operating system, advertising identifiers, approximate location from IP | Device data, service usage, general location from IP, cookies |
| Invitations | Profile information shared when you invite friends | Account and profile information when you invite friends |
| Games and promotions | Participation data from contests, giveaways and promotional events | Interactions in promotions, surveys, games and contests |
| Who it’s shared with | Affiliates, service providers, payment processors, advertising partners, authorities and sellers | Affiliates, providers, payment processors, advertising and marketing partners, authorities and business partners |
United States. I read only the promotion-related passages of Temu’s US Privacy Policy (updated November 14, 2025). It says Temu may “facilitate your invitations to friends who you want to invite to join the Service,” and that when you take part in a promotion or marketing program (its example is referring friends and accepting invitations) it may show your profile photo and/or username to other users. It also says Temu uses your profile picture and account information to identify you in promotions and events, and that sweepstakes and contests are voluntary: Temu recommends you read the rules of each one you enter. For general data collection, see our Is Temu legit? guide. The policy says you can delete your account in the app’s settings, and it points US users to a “Privacy Policy Addendum for U.S. Residents” for the rights available under state privacy laws.
The rights routes below are the Mexican and Spanish ones. Spain’s policy says you can control the visibility of your profile from the “Notifications” menu. In Mexico, to exercise your ARCO rights (access, rectification, cancellation, opposition) you must send a written request to the privacy team: Temu lists the email privacy@temu.com and deadlines of 20 business days to acknowledge receipt and 15 more to comply. In Spain you can request access, deletion of your account and data, rectification, restriction, portability and objection using the data subject request form; the data controller is Whaleco Technology Limited, in Dublin.
What I couldn’t verify is whether the app asks for access to your contacts to send invitations. Check the permissions it requests and grant them only if you need them. The policy says that when you invite friends, your account and profile information is used; tell the people you invite.
What the FTC, PROFECO, the EU and the OCU have said about Temu’s gifts and games
FTC (United States). On September 5, 2025, the FTC announced that Temu would pay a $2 million civil penalty to resolve allegations that it violated the INFORM Consumers Act. Part of the complaint concerns what the FTC calls Temu’s “gamified shopping experiences, which allow shoppers to play games, spin wheels, earn coupons, and undertake other activities while browsing and purchasing products”: the FTC alleged Temu provided no reporting mechanism for product listings there until November 2024, that the mechanisms it added later were not clear and conspicuous, and that required information about third-party sellers wasn’t clearly disclosed in gamified listings. The order requires clear disclosures in all versions of the marketplace, including gamified listings. This case is about reporting tools and seller disclosures; the release doesn’t address whether gifts are delivered or how referral rewards work. Separately, the Nebraska attorney general’s June 12, 2025 release, which I read, doesn’t specifically mention games, free gifts or referral incentives. Our Temu legit guide covers the state lawsuits.
PROFECO (Mexico). According to Expansión, PROFECO evaluated Temu on October 28, 2024 against three criteria: shipping quality, tracking information and product description. The platform passed tracking and failed shipping quality and description. On gifts, the agency says many promotions are legitimate but come with conditions, and that you should “carefully review the rules of each promotion.” It also warns about fake pages that imitate Temu and that Temu “does not have a physical address in Mexico, which could complicate the Procuraduría’s direct intervention.”
EU consumer authorities. On November 8, 2024, the CPC network, with authorities from Belgium, Germany and Ireland, notified Temu of several practices it considered contrary to the rules. Among them: forcing consumers to play a “wheel of fortune” to access the store, hiding essential information about the conditions attached to the game’s rewards (a paraphrase of the English press release). It also cited fake discounts, purchase pressure through false urgency and not telling consumers in advance that there is a minimum order amount. Temu had one month to respond. Spain’s European Consumer Centre published an information note on the case on November 18, 2024. I haven’t been able to verify how that action was resolved.
OCU and CECU (Spain). On May 16, 2024, they filed a complaint against Temu with the CNMC, as part of an action coordinated by BEUC with 18 European consumer organizations. Among other things, they said the platform is “riddled with manipulation techniques” to make you spend more than planned or to make closing your account harder.
European Commission fine. On May 28, 2026, the Commission fined Temu 200 million euros for failing to diligently identify and assess the risks of illegal products. That penalty is about product safety, not gifts or games; I cite it because it’s part of the regulatory record, but the announcement doesn’t mention games or gamification.
How to try Temu free gifts without it costing you
- Go in only through the app or temu.com. PROFECO warns about fake sites that imitate Temu, and the FTC’s advice on social media giveaway scams applies here too: be suspicious of a link sent by message or a comment that says you won, and don’t click it. Contact the business using details you already know.
- Watch for requests for payment details. The FTC asks: does this business need information like my credit card number to get this free prize? Because Temu’s own promotions can involve a minimum purchase or shipping, a charge inside the app isn’t automatically a scam. A request for your card number through a link from outside the app is the red flag.
- Value your time. If the gift requires logging in daily for weeks, put a price on those hours.
- Don’t invite anyone without telling them: the policy says your profile information is used when you invite.
- Check the minimum order. Many incentives unlock when you buy; compare with the regular price.
- Use the gift before closing your account. If you close it, you lose it.
- Never pay to “unlock” a gift outside the app. If you doubt a store, use the store legit checker.
What couldn’t be verified
The complete rules of each gift live inside the app and require a login: number of invitees, deadlines, whether shipping is free, and what happens to your gift if an invitee doesn’t buy. I also couldn’t confirm the menu names or rules in the English-language US app. Temu has no public page I could find that explains the wheels with figures. Any number about “how many invitees you need” that you see outside the app is a reference point, not a rule.
FAQ
How do you get the free gifts on Temu?
Inside the app, according to the press, through the “earn credits and free gifts” section (the Mexican app path is “Tú” → “Gana créditos y regalos gratis”): games with daily tasks, invitations to new users or codes. Each promotion has its own rules and usually asks you to invite people or buy a minimum. I couldn’t verify the menu names in the US app.
Are Temu free gifts real?
They exist as a promotion and Temu’s terms mention them, but with conditions. PROFECO says many are legitimate and require recommending the platform or minimum purchases.
Is Temu free gifts legit or a scam?
Not a scam in itself, but not unconditional either. The terms say promotions have their own rules that prevail, and regulators in the EU have questioned how the prize conditions of Temu’s wheel were shown. Fake sites and messages that imitate Temu are a real scam risk.
Do you have to invite friends to get free gifts on Temu?
Often yes. SDP Noticias cites a tablet that needed 22 new invitees as an example. Some outlets mention games without invitations; check the rules of each promotion in your app.
Do Temu free gifts cost anything or have shipping fees?
The outlets disagree: some say Temu covers shipping, others that you sometimes pay it. Check the confirmation screen before you accept. Temu’s return policy also lists some free gifts as non-returnable.
What data do I share when I invite friends on Temu?
According to its privacy policy, information from your account and profile when you invite friends, and participation data in promotions and games. In the US policy, Temu may show your profile photo or username to other users in a referral program. Temu shares data with affiliates, providers, payment processors and advertising partners.
Has the FTC taken action against Temu over its games?
On September 5, 2025, Temu agreed to a $2 million civil penalty over the INFORM Act. The FTC alleged it lacked reporting tools in its game-style shopping sections until November 2024 and didn’t clearly disclose seller information there. The release doesn’t address whether gifts are delivered.
Has the EU investigated the Temu wheel?
Yes: in November 2024, the consumer authorities network flagged as a questionable practice forcing people to play the wheel while hiding the conditions of the prizes. I haven’t been able to verify the final result of that action.
Do I lose my gifts if I close my Temu account?
Yes. The US and Spain terms say the rewards associated with the account are destroyed and cancelled when it is closed.
